I am trained in EMDR, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed practices.
I have been a licensed therapist since 1994. You will find that I am a down-to-earth person who understands the issues that face people in the current day and age. In treatment, I am comfortable giving the feedback and direction you need to help you make the changes you want in your life. While therapy can be difficult, I believe it also can be enjoyable. To that end, I use humor, playfulness, and creativity, along with psychoeducation and traditional psychotherapy practices. You will find that I will do all I can to support guide you as you go through this process.

Approaches I utilize include, but are not limited to, ACT, CBT, Narrative Therapy, IFS, DBT and Expressive therapies (I am happy to share more about these).
Welcome. The most common areas I treat in my practice include eating disorders, OCD, self-injurious behaviors, self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. I enjoying working with clients of all ages. The decision to meet with a counselor can sometimes be difficult. My first goal is to offer a supportive and accepting environment where growth and healing can occur. I believe that self-acceptance is the first step toward growth and change. Life can be full of struggles and difficulties. I find that my clients are truly doing the best that they can under their circumstances, but are often stuck in maladaptive ways of coping.

I typically incorporate aspects of CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and psychodynamic theory in my work.
Does it look like you've got everything together on the outside, but on the inside you're going through the wringer? Dealing with stress, anxiety, or negative self-talk? Having a tough time at home, in school, or on the playing field? Life can be hell sometimes... but you're not alone, and I'm here to help. I typically work with teens, college students, and young adults who are looking to get more out of life and push through challenges.

I utilize therapeutic interventions from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and a Health at Every Size approach.
In life, we are constantly faced with trials and obstacles that can cause us to worry about our futures and what they hold for us. This often leads to spending much of our time and energy fixated on things that are out of our control, which causes more suffering than is needed. I have found that helping my patients to accept what they cannot control and focus their efforts on what they can control to be an effective way of creating a life worth living, regardless of whether they are facing problems like anxiety, depression, trauma, or eating disorders.

In addition to a strengths based orientation, I approach healing and recovery for all with a strong foundation in CBT, DBT, and ACT and approach eating disorders with a Health at Every Size perspective.
“The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, but the realist adjusts the sails”. I have made it my mission to help people use the resources they have to reach their destinations. We may not have all of the resources we desire, but using my strengths based approach to counseling, we can realize and maximize the tools, resources, and supports we have available to us. This approach lends itself most beautifully to my work with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, women’s issues, pre and post partum related challenges, couples counseling and eating disorders.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
