My specialties include cultural competence in working with Mormon or LDS clients anywhere on the spectrum of belief/activity, faith transitions, and working with athletes on sports and performance psychology, body image issues, and building positive relationships with coaches and parents.
Hi, I’m Kelly. I currently have a few openings in my schedule! I own a teletherapy practice and see clients in VA, NC, AZ, and UT. I help adults and teens who want to work through relationship issues, perfectionism, life transitions, and grief/loss. Other common presenting problems include anxiety, depression, academic/professional stress, faith crises, gender/sexual identity issues, and a desire to improve athletic performance by improving your mental game. Many of my adult clients generally function well on their own but need help working through a specific issue such as how to set boundaries with a parent.

I have spent my entire career working to help make the lives of others better. From working with the victims of Hurricane Katrina to working and serving the homeless in Washington, DC. The majority of my life has been spent in the service of others. I graduated from Liberty University with a master’s in Professional Counseling and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling: Addiction and Treatment. I have learned to help effectively and efficiently those suffering from mental illness. I believe in treating the whole person, and sometimes that includes working with their families.

Struggling with anxiety can be all-consuming. It's easy to lose sight of your inner strengths and resources. My role is to help you discover the capacity you already have and move beyond the limits that anxiety has placed on your life. You can learn to both decrease your anxiety and depression and increase your quality of life, This shift in perspective is extremely powerful, yet it's just the starting point in understanding and insight into emotional and mental health problems. The aim is to find resolution, acceptance and peace and to prevent the exasperation and development of more serious mental health issues.

Often the first step towards making a change is taking a realistic look at where you've been, where you are now, and where you want to be. Although it can be painfully difficult at first, you can begin making changes, one day at a time, that will take you closer to living the life you desire. Using EMDR and talk therapy, we'll focus on healing the wounds of the past, finding joy in the present, and bringing clarity to your future. It's time for you let go of the things that hold you back and start to discover all the ways in which you were meant to shine. Hope and healing are at the heart of what I have to offer.

I'm am looking for individuals who want to make positive changes in their lives and are ready to do the work to get there. People struggle with so many life challenges from personal decisions, decisions of others that affect us, life transitions, and just stressors of the world we live in. Clients that are ready to do the hard work of sharing their stories and exploring different ways of thinking and feeling are exactly those whom I am ready to walk beside to do sometimes hard, and always rewarding, work.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Therapists

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

Therapists and clients don’t need to share the same belief system or background to be able to work together effectively, but, especially for those whose concerns relate to their religion or cultural background, a therapist whose training includes a focus on cultural competence may be better able to form a therapeutic bond, even if they do not have an extensive history with or understanding of their client’s background before therapy begins.

Why is it important to find a therapist sensitive to Church of Christ/Latter Day Saints values?

Each individual brings a unique history and background to therapy, making it important to find a licensed therapist who is trained in a broad range of therapeutic modalities. In addition, for people who grow up in a faith tradition such as LDS that strongly influences the conduct of everyday life, finding a therapist who understands or shares that background can ease the disclosure of sensitive information and facilitate the therapeutic process.

Why might someone feel comfortable with an LDS-attuned therapist?

While qualifications and experience are always important, research has long established that a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. It is wise to find a therapist who is responsive to your questions and concerns and with whom you feel you can establish a rapport. A therapist who is sensitive to LDS values and beliefs and the role they play in the lives of Church members can offer Mormon clients a welcome sense of safety, assurance that their community and culture will be understood, and contribute to the bond between client and therapist, all of which support the therapeutic process.

How do I recognize a good LDS therapist?

LDS therapists are licensed mental health professionals—holding a master’s or doctoral degree in medicine, nursing, psychology, counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy—who are also familiar with Mormon principles and values. They have an understanding of the culture and the important role the Church plays in the lives of individuals and families, which allows them to be especially sensitive to the kinds of emotional difficulties those raised in the faith can be prone to. Like all effective therapists, a good LDS therapist will have undergone training and certification in a variety of treatment modalities that help people through crises and enable them to master the challenges of everyday life.

Who is included in Psychology Today’s directory of Mormon/LDS therapists?

The directory of LDS therapists includes therapists who have shared their cultural background in their profiles. However, not all therapists choose to disclose this information; these individuals would not appear in search results for this reason. The directory also shows therapists who indicate that they have extensive experience working with LDS clients and/or communities, regardless of their own background or religious affiliation.
