Do you struggle with substance use as your primary diagnosis or concern and are ready to be empowered to make positive change in your life? Research shows it does not matter what circumstances bring a person to substance abuse counseling but the individual effort they are willing to put forth. My goal is to meet a person where they are, and assist in providing the tools necessary for success.

I enjoy helping individuals find balance by addressing the issues that keep them stuck. Feeling depressed, overwhelmed, anxious and wondering how to work through painful experiences from the past? Sometimes the most important thing you can do is to show up and ask for help. My work is to provide an empathic, nonjudgmental atmosphere for you to work through your discomfort and create a healing experience. I hold the belief that we are all resilient and have the internal capacity to heal ourselves. An essential element in this effort is the development of a trusting relationship between client and therapist.

Throughout our lives, we endure and overcome many obstacles. Each one provides growth opportunities, yet some leave us feeling broken, trying to put the pieces back together. Trauma has a profound effect on our internal system, impacting how we view and interact with the world. It may manifest in relational struggles, addiction, avoidant/risky behaviors, and various forms of self-sabotage, all hijacking our ability to live a self-actualized life. No matter the root of your trauma – developmental, single/multiple event trauma, or a mixture of all, healing is possible.

I am Kellyn Lesch, OTR/L. I believe that each client possesses an innate ability to heal, and I simply help them find they key to unlock this power within themselves. My intuition guides my interventions and I am able to see trauma, chronic pain, and mental health challenges at the source instead of where symptoms lie. I address the whole person; mind, body, and spirit. As an occupational therapist, holistic intervention has become part of my DNA and my sessions blend bodywork/manual therapy, trauma integration, mindfulness and spiritual practices, sensory processing, self-regulation, and nervous system modulation/management.

As an LPC with over 35 years of experience and trained in EMDR, I work with a variety of clients experiencing issues related to trauma, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and sexuality. As a former firefighter with experience treating Veterans, I understand the unique issues facing those who have served in uniform. Additionally, I work with clients on enhancing performance athletically, in the boardroom or as operators. When appropriate, I draw on each client's unique spirituality as a source of strength. My clients report increased joy, happiness and success as well as decreased anxiety, worry, self-doubt and flashbacks.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
