The philosophy that guides me in my work with clients is a strong core belief in respect for each person's unique culture and heritage. There are no cookie cutter therapeutic interventions that work universally on all clients with the exception of the development of strong therapeutic relationship between client and therapist. I believe therapy needs to be meaningful, personal and tailored for each person or couple. A distinctive of my practice is to provide an integrated approach that treats the whole person. I am trained in Gottman Level 1 & 2, Prepare/Enrich certified, and use the skills learned when working with couples.

“We do not see things as they are, we see them- as we are.” Penned by Anais Ninn, this quote beautifully illustrates that our perspective, which is affected by our life experiences, greatly influences how we view our world. I love guiding clients to focus their mental lens on their sources of strength instead of worries or uncontrollable circumstances. I have worked as a school counselor at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. I am a parent of three children so I understand the struggles of parenting. I have been married for 25 years, so I understand relationship issues too.

Many of our clients are recovering from trauma, adverse events or behavior challenges. We work with the whole family to create support and understanding.

In an ideal world, our relationship experiences are secure, safe, accessible, and responsive and we learn we can trust and are loveable, worthy, and deserving of our needs being met. When this is not our experience, we find ways to adapt and survive moments of disconnection, invalidation, hurt, or overwhelm. This plays out as self-limiting beliefs, hiding parts of who we are, denying or being flooded with emotions, shutting down, people pleasing, perfectionism, hustling for our worth, and/or building up our protections. I work with adults, children (2-18), parents, and families to connect, heal, and be each other's greatest resource

We are wired for love and meaning. When we lose the people/things we care about, it is deeply felt in our body, mind, and spirit. Loss can disorient, disorganize, and disrupt our identity, place in the world, and sense of security. Grieving a loss (passing of a loved one, a relationship ending, or change in life circumstances such as career, health, orlocation) is a sacred process of honoring the very important role, needs, and purpose the person or important thing offered you. Grief represents a fundamental dilemma, how to love and live with an open heart and survive the inevitable endings, transitions, and losses that life brings.

My orientation to psychotherapy is integrative; I recognize the value of psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral and family approaches. I have come to believe that no one approach is necessarily the best. Each individual is unique, so the therapeutic approach that is used should reflect the needs of the client. By tailoring therapy to fit the needs of each individual, an atmosphere is created in which the client feels secure to explore his or her feelings. I have worked in many different treatment settings, and with diverse population of adults and adolescents. I have experience treating individuals, couples, and families.

Being a child is a special time full of curiosity, exploration, and learning. It is also a time when your body is growing, language is developing, social skills are evolving, and your capacity to cope is a work in progress. It doesn’t take much to feel unsure, overwhelmed, stressed, or unseen. Struggles are expressed through emotional and behavioral distress - tantrums, defiance, dysregulation, difficulty with focus, transitions, separation, or withdrawal from others/school/activities. It can also show up as jealousy, attention-seeking, aggression, anxiety, depression, or hyperactivity. PCIT is specifically designed for this stage.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
