Do you feel like no matter how hard you try; you’re still not doing enough? Maybe you’re bottling up a lot of stress and pressure. You may feel angry, sad, alone, or that something is wrong. Have you tried making changes, and still feel stuck? If you’re considering therapy, you’re probably becoming more aware of the things in your life that just don’t seem to be working. You may be unsure about starting therapy, whether it will help you or not. Therapy can be a great opportunity to learn how to make the changes you want to see, and you absolutely can change your life.

The journey of finding a therapist can be difficult and frustrating at times. You may ask yourself, "do I really need to talk with someone?" Coming to the realization that you may need to talk to some one is challenging . Taking that first step in searching, for someone, to talk to is moving in the direction, of finding peace, hope and healing.

I always gravitated to jobs that entailed helping people: Teacher; American Red Cross; Covenant House. I had also pursued seminary studies and was briefly on track to becoming a clergy man. Entry into grad school to study Counseling seemed the next natural step in my career path. But there was a more profound reason I became a Professional Helper, and that is my own lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression.

Everyone faces challenges in life. At some point, you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns of thinking or behaving that no longer work for you. I believe counseling is a collaborative process, in which we will work together to address the barriers which may be holding you back from fully engaging in your life or achieving your true potential. Together we can identify your individual strengths and find the motivation to improve your life situation. I would be honored to be a part of your journey toward personal growth.

I specialize in child and family therapy with an emphasis in marriage counseling, but I am open to helping anyone that is looking for a way to improve their lives through understanding their emotions and how those emotions are affecting their behaviors and actions. I have been married for the past 16 years and have 5 children of my own, and I understand the common struggles of maintaining a working relationship with a spouse and with children. I spent 10 years working with the foster care system, and I spent the last 4 years supervising a school counseling program and conducting individual counseling for an array of individuals.

I take a holistic and integrative approach to therapy which involves integrating various elements of different theories and practice. I lean most heavily on approaches focused on how people’s thinking can change feelings and behaviors while also implementing an approach focused on helping clients achieve their highest potential. Instead of energy spent on the past or negative behaviors, I emphasize the goodness in clients and work toward growth and self-actualization. I also use approaches oriented toward problem-solving including Hypnotherapy, NLP Brain Training, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Coaching, and EMDR therapy.

I'm a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience helping adults remove the obstacles to achieving their life goals - self-attacks, passive behavior, negative assumptions, delaying difficult life decisions, and repetitive, destructive relationship patterns. Our work together is collaborative, respectful, and goal-focused. It is also, at times, challenging - as is often the case with growth and learning, but the end result is the joy of increased freedom. Therapy gives a unique opportunity to examine our emotional life and re-evaluate the beliefs and presuppositions that affect our perceptions of ourselves and others.

My ideal client is anyone ready to do the work. Whether you are 100% invested or 1% percent invested. I am here to support you no matter where you are on the readiness scale. Change can be difficult and scary to navigate. It can bring up emotions such as guilt, shame, anger, resentment, fear, jealousy, and all the other emotions that people would rather not experience. Together I believe we can navigate these difficult emotions, reach your goals, and improve your quality of life.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
