I believe therapy is where a person is able to elicit assistance, for any set of struggles, by an unbiased, non-judgmental, empowering professional in a safe environment. Each person gets individualized treatment through their specific goals and tailored interventions. Through active listening, I support each client in identifying current areas of concern, collaborating with them to promote independence and self-reliance, and increasing their ability to overcome obstacles holding them back from achieving what they would like to achieve.

I am an LCSW with extensive experience in trauma and attachment work and have a significant history working with children and their caregivers. I have taken a particular interest in working with people in the midst of life transitions and caregivers who are experiencing perinatal mental health challenges. I believe in the power of connection: connection to one's own inner sense of self, connection between caregivers and their infants/children to build healthy attachment patterns, connection between couples in the midst of parenting, and the healing connection that can occur through therapy.

I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, and related mental health issues for women including depression, anxiety, body image struggles, self-harm, and relationship distress. Therapy requires both the therapist and the client to be active - I think of it as a joint venture of taking on your unwanted symptoms together. The process of recovery and therapy may feel daunting to you. A part of you may want freedom from your symptoms and yet another part seems to be holding on to your current lifestyle. These are normal feelings and talking about this dilemma is a good place to start.

Often, past memories are debilitating and you feel like you're right back in that overwhelming situation. At times, you wish you could change what happened in the past but know you can't. What if you could change the way you relate to these memories and take back control over your body and emotions? There has been so much opportunity for your inner critic to speak. A voice in your head constantly criticizes you, and you've had enough. It's time to change this voice. I can help you see your past from the perspective of compassion, not judgment, and learn tools to move forward to an exciting future.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
