Do you feel successful in some areas of life but feel other areas are lacking? Perhaps you are struggling to function as you once did. Life transitions, stresses of parenting, and caring for others are burning you out. You probably have some idea of how you got to this point but you need help living the life you imagine. We will collaborate to get to the root of your struggles. Some clients respond better to making connections with their past before proceeding to a place of change while others respond better to more present-focused techniques. Together, we will work to meet your goals and improve your overall quality of life.

From the outside, you may look like you have your stuff together. But behind the mask you wear for others, you feel lost and filled with self-doubt. You're starting to worry all the time and feel overwhelmed. You don’t understand why you keep making the same bad decisions, ending up in the same crappy situations. You question if you are enough and what you're doing wrong. Feeling crappy, dealing with trauma, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, chronic people-pleasing, worried all the time, dealing with a breakup? I help women to make sense of the overwhelm, and find relief from life's traumas.

The heart of my approach to counseling centers on relationship. In my opinion, the counseling relationship becomes the foundation for meaningful change; a conduit of hope and healing for those who have been wounded. As I welcome a new client, I am primarily interested in creating a safe base and secure haven of trust from which to work. Facing our struggles and confronting our issues can be painful at times. My commitment to my clients is to walk alongside them through the struggles they are currently facing and teach them more adaptive ways to manage their lives.

Right now, you’re struggling to find purpose in your daily life — feeling overwhelmed by grief or other role demands. You need a warm, safe environment to explore patterns that are holding you back and find ways of moving forward. While it’s easier to hide from what is causing you pain, by taking action now you will begin to understand who you are and what you want out of life. Regardless if you are a student, a first responder, a new mom, a professional, or retired— you will learn new ways to cope with life — but most importantly learn to make positive changes toward greater life balance and acceptance, while creating meaning.

Hi! I’m Mary. I have advanced post-graduate training in multiple therapy modalities including Internal Family Systems (IFS Level 1), Exposure Response Prevention (ERP), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and will recommend the modality that is best suited to your needs (more on each below). Regardless of modality, I generally incorporate neurobiology education into our work so you can better understand what your brain and body are doing and why.

Initially, therapy can help us learn skills to cope with our anxious or painful feelings. It can help us manage stressful situations and feel more stable. Then therapy provides a safe place where together we can dig deeper to discover the causes of our feelings. Through the therapeutic relationship we become aware. The awareness glares so bright that change is inevitable.

Insta: therapybydenise Tiktok: therapybydenise - My practice focuses on the economic and systemic influences of generational trauma within disenfranchised communities. Addressing trauma within cultural norms and family structures provides for a 360º vantage point of an individual’s world view. This is especially important when I am working with people of color, women, individuals of the LBGTQIA+ community, and any persons that comes from a minority status. Trauma and pain can be considered as muscle memory. This type of emotional memory can be passed down through generations and if left unexplored, can lead to emotional issues.

Women's Issues Therapists
How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
