I began helping others in 1990 as a Peer Counselor (Drug Exemption NCO) while on active duty in the Marine Corps. After earning degrees in Psychology and Social Work at UNCW/ECU, I obtained licensure to practice independently with the Virginia Board of Health Professionals in 2004. I am originally from the Hampton Roads area but have worked internationally with people from many different backgrounds. I have continued to support the military, as well as the community at large, for over 3 decades with evidence-based treatments for trauma (PTSD).

I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults, and adults. With my clients, I enjoy working with the following issues: depression, anxiety, self-esteem/body image, career decision-making, life planning, and academic issues.

I believe that building a relationship is the most important part of the therapeutic process. My goal is to provide a non-judgmental place of empathy, understanding, and collaboration to help you work through what brings you to this relationship and achieve your goals.

I enjoy working with adolescents, young adults, and adults experiencing issues relating to sexuality, gender identity, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, grief, life transitions, depression, anxiety, and trauma. As a counselor, I enjoy working with clients who are seeking growth and healing and want to have more satisfying connections in their lives, as well as clients who are willing to put in the work to achieve these goals.

I love working with individuals and families and have been for 8 years in the New River Valley in a wide variety of roles. My approach is tailored for each client, situation and goal to find what works best for each unique individual. I am a Clinical Psychologist in the Christiansburg area. I use a variety of therapies to help each individual with their specific needs. My approach to therapy is warm, empathic, and caring. Whether there is pain from which you are seeking relief, or ways you just feel stuck, my job is to empower and equip you to grow into more of the person you want to be – and to respect and care for the person you already have become! I also offer objective testing for ADHD and other forms of psychological assessment.

I have experience providing therapy in outpatient, school based, and in-home settings working with ADD/ADHD, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, personality disorders, dual diagnosis, anger management, substance use and abuse, parenting issues, and more. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and further certified to provide Trauma Focused CBT in the state of VA.

As a dedicated counselor, I am passionate about assisting individuals from all walks of life toward personal growth and fulfillment. I have a special interest in helping people overcome anxiety and trauma, as well as depression, manage adjustment to life difficulties, deal with substance recovery, and seek personal growth. My view of those I serve is based on an understanding of each individual as a whole person, which goes beyond their challenges. I have a Person-Centered philosophy, with use of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).

Life is complex. There are times when anxiety, depression, trauma, personal issues (relationships, family, career), and substances are experienced. And there are times where joy and excitement are experienced. My therapeutic style is laid-back, warmth, empathic, compassionate, strength oriented, and lastly using humor to therapeutically laugh during times when it is appropriate. I specialize in working with parents and caregivers who are struggling in their relationship with their child. When parenting a challenging child, caregivers can find themselves in cycles of constant conflict, either walking on eggshells and/or lashing out in ways that seem unrecognizable. The caregivers I support often face issues such as verbal and physical aggression, destruction of property, and youth substance use. Caregivers deserve nonjudgmental support in navigating these difficult relationships, coupled with practical intervention plans that allow them to regain a sense of peace and safety within their homes and themselves.

I truly believe counseling is helping people to help themselves. I provide support and useful tools to assist clients in attaining their goals of personal growth and symptom relief. I enjoy working with clients from high school graduates to age 70. My primary focus of interest is working with clients who are motivated to seek short term therapy to improve their quality of life. My areas of expertise include: trauma, sexual assault, life transitions, depression, anxiety, low self esteem, grief, sexual identity, eating and body image issues.

One of my goals is that the main benefit you, or your child, gains from therapy is that you become increasingly self-aware of your own strengths and how they can best serve you to overcome whatever you are facing.
