Your life can be better. Change for the better takes work, discipline, & hope. Dedication to the process with a qualified therapist is key & much of the work (and the progress) takes place between our hourly sessions. The best approach is to develop an understanding of who you are, what you want and where you want to go. Together we will, through solution focused therapy & traditional psychotherapy, develop goals & a plan, implement the plan & periodically assess your progress. My goal is not to have you facing the same issues three years from now, but to begin to see real, meaningful, life-changing results within months.

You might be facing life's transitions, experiencing some unexpected reactions in yourself, and wondering what it means. Your search is for understanding and acceptance, with the hope to transform these experiences into personal growth and a deeper sense of self. There might be moments where you feel lost, anxious, or disconnected from your authentic self. The goal is not to eliminate these uncomfortable feelings, but instead to understand, accept, and transform them into personal growth, meaning, and purpose. You're looking for a place to be truly seen, heard, accepted, to foster authentic self-growth and integration.

So often we know that something needs to change but we're not sure where to begin. Maybe you're searching for a place to freely unpack your feelings about yourself. Or perhaps you need time to reflect on your life or relationships. If you're feeling frustrated with your efforts to improve your life or becoming discouraged by always ending up in the same place, counseling can help. As a therapist I offer adults, teens, and families an inclusive and welcoming space in their journey toward making positive choices, improving mental and physical health, and creating a more satisfying lifestyle.

My ideal client are the ones who tried therapy in the past, felt like it didn't match or work as well as they had wanted and are hesitant to try again but hold out hope that they can have the life they always wanted. One of the greatest feelings I have as a therapist is watching a client is seeing a client go from lack of confidence and hope to to a place of confidence, peace and happiness.

Wellness has been defined as a way of life oriented toward optimal health and well-being in which body, mind, and spirit are integrated to live more fully within the human and natural community. Ideally, it is the optimum state of health and well-being that each individual is capable of achieving. When working together in counseling, I perceive one’s thoughts are related to their feelings and reactions to events, not the events themselves. Counseling sessions are individualized to meet the unique needs of each client.

I have had a long career working with families and individuals who are struggling with stressors in their life. Many times these are due to an adolescent or teenager who is having difficulty in the home or in school due ADHD, autism, anxiety, or anger management or a significant life event such as divorce, loss of job or death in the family.

We provide a range of psychological evaluations in Richmond–for children, teens, and adults. Assessments for dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia (learning disabilities in reading, writing, and math). We also provide evaluations for ADHD and autism. And, because many of our clients also struggle with anxiety, depression, or similar, we can help sort out how these impact day-to-day functioning.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
