Some issues I address: marital and relational conflicts, spirituality, sexual identity, various abuses, sexual addiction, unhealthy habits, anger, depression, forgiveness, accountability, anxiety and grief.
Hello. My name is Jeff Watros. Since 1995, I have been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Perhaps you've noticed one reality that applies to everyone of us: interaction with other human beings. Whether in the context of family, marriage, friend, acquaintance or total stranger, we can find ourselves struggling to understand one another. Sometimes hurt results. However, relationships can be repaired with a willing heart and humble attitude.

About me: In my spare time here in “Earth school,” I enjoy walking/sitting outdoors, collaging, following science/ spirituality/wellness communities, eating the rainbow, and spending time with human and animal friends and my partner.
I believe we all possess unique strengths that can help us overcome obstacles and reach new potentials. Often, our strengths end up buried or bruised, and we could use some help reclaiming these. My 10+ years of clinical work have brought many "hero's journey" partnerships. We often start with anxiety or depression/grief, or oscillations between these. There may be longing for more meaning or zest for life. Often, folks find themselves repeating the same patterns and feeling confused, frustrated, or ashamed. These patterns helped you to survive. I honor your instincts and aim to help re-pattern into lasting peace and love for life.

I am Dr. Bradley-Shabazz. I have over 15 years of clinical experience. My passion is to ensure that you are empowered to live your best life. I'm here to help you explore what that is and what that means for you. My career has been connected to the child welfare system as either social worker or therapist. It has allowed me the opportunity to work with an array of client needs. My specialties have evolved from that experience to include, trauma recovery, child therapy, and familial relationships. My own personal loss and journey through widowhood, shaped my interest in grief and loss.

I provide a safe and supportive place to explore and heal the roots of my clients' struggles. I view counseling as a transformational process that enables clients to heal from past wounds and experiences in order to better connect with themselves, others, and God. Working from an attachment perspective, I enjoy helping my clients work through challenging personal and spiritual issues, life transitions, relationship difficulties, wounds from childhood, trauma and anxiety/stress. I believe that ultimately it is God's healing presence in the midst of this process that brings hope, freedom and restoration.

There are some changes and losses in life that break us. Completely. Totally. Every area is fragmented, jagged and raw. Sometimes the hurt is so overwhelming that we become numb, afraid, avoiding things that we used to enjoy. It’s hard to put those pieces back together again. They don’t fit the way they did before. While time may heal some wounds, moving from being functional in your pain to being free from that hurt takes effort and therapy. As a licensed clinical social worker with over ten years of experience, I’m here to assist you in moving from function to freedom.

I am passionate about helping clients engage their stories in a way that leads to a better understanding of who they are. As a Christian Counselor, I seek to create a compassionate space for you to express your fears, hurts or stressors while combating the shame that often compels us to hide. My role is to guide, encourage, and challenge you as you move towards growth. I also believe not all counseling is about change. Sometimes, circumstances outside of your control lead to a hard season of life. In these instances, I seek to empathize, listen and identify the truths and values that help us feel a sense of calm in a chaotic world.

In my work I make deep connections with people as we meet and talk honestly. Each person who meets with me seeks to find meaning and purpose in life. Part of this process is helping the unconscious and the conscious talk to each other because many of our inner conflicts, i.e. fights with ourselves, come from a lack of communication between the conscious and unconscious. A part of the work is exploring what lies in shadow. This is not just repressed, ugly stuff. For many folks untapped gifts and potential lie in the unknown parts of themselves.

Sometimes, the bravest thing we can do is just show up. Prioritizing yourself, your relationships, and your needs is one of the greatest gifts we can give. When you show up at therapy, you take your first steps towards growth and healing and you won’t be on the journey alone. I invite anyone who feels the need to talk to reach out and take that step. Maybe you don’t even know how to explain, you just want things to be different. Whatever you're navigating, I can provide a space for you to feel heard, seen, and respected, while we pursue your goals together.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
