I'm pleased to offer teletherapy services to individuals, couples, and families (age 18+) in Virginia. I strive to ensure that therapy is a safe, compassionate, and collaborative space to work toward the changes you desire. With a warm and inviting style, and humor where appropriate, I take a very direct approach to therapy. This process works best when we are open and honest. Having a strong therapeutic relationship will cultivate an environment of unconditional positive regard and acceptance so the work toward change can begin. It is with care, compassion, and respect that I can cheerlead and challenge at the same time.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with work experience in schools and outpatient practice. I believe that we all have the ability to lead rich, beautiful lives, sometimes we just don't have the tools (yet) to make that happen. I work primarily with older children (especially middle schoolers), adolescents/teens, and young adults, though I and others in my practice also work with adults. I can help with many conditions, including ADHD, depression, and anxiety. I specialize in working with autistic clients and/or those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

You’re here because you’ve been struggling in the most vulnerable parts of your life, and it's chipping away at your relationship, your confidence, and your sense of self. Maybe you’ve had insight to what’s wrong for a while, but you’ve tried everything you can think of and you keep getting stuck at the same points. Sexuality is a core component of your being; experiencing sexual challenges can disrupt the harmony in other areas of your life. My job is to help you restore that balance and unlock the potential of your sexual wellness. A better sex life is not out of your reach.

I integrate psychodynamic therapy from an intersectional, feminist, lens with elements from ACT, DBT, and astrology, focusing on issues of identity development, relational and racial trauma, and mood disorders.
In a world that seeks to disconnect us from our inner wisdom and authenticity, I think therapy, in its best form, is a reclamation of who we really are. I believe therapy has the opportunity and responsibility to enact revolutionary change in our lives, our relationships, and our communities. To do this, we'll embark on a journey of greater self-awareness, understanding, and compassion. Oftentimes, we carry with us patterns and narratives that formed during our earliest years and in our work together we'll turn these narratives on their head to get at the truth of the person that you want to be and the life you want to live.

I believe the relationship between therapist and client supports the client's capacity for self-understanding, insight, and change. Therapy is also a space for clients to learn how to establish a healthy connection with their life experiences. Cultivating a healthy connection with life is an important factor; it helps clients reduce a range of negative and overwhelming thoughts and feelings associated with anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief. Ultimately, therapy can help clients reconcile difficult emotions and experiences, so they can restore a sense self-worth, and an ability to feel safe and trust (others and themselves).

Distressing experiences change the way the brain and body process the world around us. As a result of this change, the nervous system becomes dysregulated. Therapy provides a warm safe environment to explore your thoughts and feelings. Together we will focus on using evidence-based treatment methods based on Neurobiology to assist in affecting holistic and lasting change. Some issues I am skilled in include anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, women’s issues, and relationship difficulties. My approach goes beyond the distress experienced within and extends further into thriving in community and harmony with others.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
