The two most important factors in effective psychotherapy are finding the right person with whom you can connect and knowing that the therapy is geared to your unique needs. My 45 years of counseling have taught me therapy is most effective when we work together. Therapy is a cooperative effort. I want to identify your strengths and apply them to your problems. If you have a history of trauma, I have found that EMDR and Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy arethe most effective ways to treat trauma and am excited to offer these therapies.

My theoretical foundation is person-centered with a strong influence of humanistic counseling therapies such as positive psychology. My philosophy focuses attention on the present and future. I focus on goal-oriented questioning to assist a client in moving into a future-oriented direction to help the client reduce negative thinking and behaviors, increase motivation and resiliency, and become a healthier and happier, human being. I take a very holistic approach to counseling in which I focus on the integration of the mind, body, and spirit.

The most profound force is a person’s ability to heal. Life can deal its chaos and turmoil to anyone, but I believe that we are all on our own path toward wholeness. When we lose ourselves for a time, problems such as anxiety, depression, or addiction may arise. My priorities as a therapist are to be a collaborator and guide to nurture the growth and healing that is already occurring in you. I strive to bring a relational style to the therapeutic process knowing that it is sacred–yet potentially painful and intimidating–to ‘bear one’s soul’ to another. I am LGBTQ+ affirming and seek to create a warm and welcoming space for all.

Life is hard, no matter how you slice it. The birth process is traumatic for both mother and infant. Aging, sickness, and death are unavoidable parts of life. So are transitions, losses, and uncertainties. This is nobody's fault. It's not a punishment. This is "life on life's terms." None of us can manage the challenges of this life entirely on our own. We all need support, especially at times of loss and transition. If you, a family member, or loved one ages 14 and up are dealing with grief and loss, uncertainty, anxiety, depressive symptoms, processing trauma, or adapting to life changes, I'm here to help.

I am passionate about helping clients engage their stories in a way that leads to a better understanding of who they are. As a Christian Counselor, I seek to create a compassionate space for you to express your fears, hurts or stressors while combating the shame that often compels us to hide. My role is to guide, encourage, and challenge you as you move towards growth. I also believe not all counseling is about change. Sometimes, circumstances outside of your control lead to a hard season of life. In these instances, I seek to empathize, listen and identify the truths and values that help us feel a sense of calm in a chaotic world.

As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life today. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
