To heal it is important to be heard, understood, and seen. We go through different life events and can experience suffering along the way that impairs daily living. My goal is getting to the root of the present challenge to support lasting change so people can experience the well-being they deserve as a human right! I take an integrative, compassionate, and accepting approach meeting people where they are at focusing with experiential, emotion focused, DBT, ACT, mindfulness, psychodynamic, and person centered approaches to help people heal. I collaborate with clients to create meaning and draw out authentic living.

Sometimes, life is unpredictable. Before we know it, we can end up in a hole that appears too big to climb out of. This is particularly the case with our traumatic experiences. Whether it is big or little, traumatic experiences carry with us throughout our lives, creating lasting impressions on who we are and what we are capable of. Luckily, we have developed ways to overcome and climb out of the hole.

I believe the story you tell yourself about yourself and your relationships is far more meaningful and descriptive than a diagnosis or other label that may have been placed on you. My goal is to assist you in gaining clarity about that story, who you are and where you are in life – your aspirations, talents, skills, obligations, and needs – so you can move confidently into the future, staying connected to those you love and the things that bring you joy. Don’t be a victim of fear, insecurity, or disappointment – harness your natural abilities, virtues, and powers to be the hero of your life.

Hi there, I'm Mr. Gunsolley, and I'm here to share my journey through the world of mental health advocacy with you! My undergraduate years were spent at Augustana College in Illinois, where I explored the fascinating realms of Political Science, Public Administration, and History. But my story doesn't end there! My practice is named En Route because in my experience all of us are on some form of journey. Sometimes our journeys are smooth, other times they're complicated and maybe frightening. Very few people create and sustain change all alone. Community is essential and it can be fun. There are so many directions to head and goals to accomplish on our journeys; it is my honor and privilege to join people and groups on their paths. Turns out a lot of us learn best by doing. Horses help us make real time change and offer instant feedback. It doesn't hurt that horses have much in common with people and act as great relationship role models.

Not accepting new clients
I believe in a client's ability to work towards change and I am grateful for the opportunity to be along for the journey. I am particularly interested in working with clients who experience career related stress. Our jobs/careers take up a significant portion of our lives and career counseling helps clients to explore new jobs and education, or manage the stressors of a current job. I also have experience working with clients with symptoms of depression, anxiety, ADHD and substance use.

I personally know what it is like to struggle with mental health, substance use and life problems, and how hard it can be to reach out for help. I believe that while we can be strong and do it on our own, we can find ourselves merely enduring our circumstances. At times, the strategies we create to manage anxiety, depression and trauma can be helpful and other times they can make things worse. By recognizing this and working together, I hope to help assist my clients get farther than they have been before.

If you're struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression and/or finding yourself dealing with these issues in unproductive ways such as substance use then feel free to reach out for a consultation.
We all have an inherent need to make sense of our lives. Psychotherapy addresses this by becoming aware of our unconscious (unaware) patterns. Freud coined the term "repetition compulsion" by which we can unknowingly repeat past experiences. In essence, we want to change but cling to what's familiar. Long-term psychotherapy is my preference as it provides the necessary time and safety for these dynamics to emerge and therefore create freedom if desired.

Trauma finds it's way into each of our lives. Whether it's the loss of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the devastating impact of addiction or the confusing changes in identity; we all find ourselves in situations we never thought would apply to us. It is during these times that a safe place and a clear reflection become invaluable. Having trust in the clinical process takes time; while at the same time confidence can be fostered through authentic connection, a felt sense of empathy, and a true surrender to proven practices. When the right combination is applied, healing is the inevitable result.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
