Kia ora! I am JC. I work with couples, families, and individuals. I specialize in couples therapy because communication is key to an excellent relationship. Some of the most common reasons couples come to see me are: disagreements, relational trauma, family issues, and infidelity. The most important thing to me is a good connection between client and therapist. I work very hard to keep a warm, inviting, and non-judgmental atmosphere in my sessions. I go at your pace and work on the things you want to work on. I am here to help you!

The best gift you can give yourself and the ones you love is a healthy, balanced version of you. If you struggle with anxiety, depression, parenting, child emotional issues, adoption and foster care, past trauma, living with a chronic disease, changes in faith values, addiction in the family, and relationship problems–including divorce and blended families, I believe I can help you! Besides my lived experience with each one of those issues, I have worked in public health and educational settings and developed proficiency in treating children, families, couples, and individuals to improve their mental health.

I began clinical work with individuals, couples, and families in 2000, and have developed a strong interest in four areas: (1) core principles of healing, growth, and success in our efforts to change, (2) character strengths and virtues central to any "good" we create in ourselves and with others, (3) the inevitability of "relationship" in daily living - the "what" and "how" of it, and (4) the reality that clients are the gatekeepers of change and true heroes in their own success stories! I have learned that addressing our problems ultimately involves drawing on our strengths and the best that lies within us and our relationships!

I've had the opportunity to travel the world, see wondrous places, and shared in the various cultures of people of diverse backgrounds. After attending college, I enlisted in the US Air Force and served my country with honor before transferring to the Air Force Reserve to continue my service and pursue a higher education. I graduated in 2018 and have been diligently working in the field with a wide spectrum of clients, ever learning and growing as I work toward improving and expanding my skill set as a counselor. My passion for people and the profession have helped me greatly in being successful in my work.

Need help today? I have openings! It's been a rough few years—thanks, 2020! But I see you. I know you've been running yourself ragged trying to make your life work. You're exhausted, dissatisfied, and increasingly uninspired. People are trying to compliment you, saying 'You're doing great!' but you get in your head, and it's a negative spiral. You used to thrive, but now you feel lost, lonely, and dissatisfied. Your anxiety and depression are keeping you stuck, so you find yourself coping with your new best friend Netflix and withdrawing from life. Something has to change!

My ideal client is someone who feels motivated to find empowerment over their own life. My ideal client is someone who wants to use therapy as a space to explore, express, process, brainstorm, feel, connect, and create. Therapy is a resource to them to assist in the ongoing challenges that arise as a result of being human. They want a therapist who will both support them and challenge them. They may have a background of traumatic experiences, they may have an official or unofficial diagnosis of neurodivergence, or they may be someone who simply feels like we would be a good therapist/client match.

Your teen's confident, responsible, happy nature has turned into a withdrawn overburdened teenager. Your teen is a really good kid but is taking on all the burdens of life including their friends and family problems as their responsibility. You finally talked to her and she didn't want to talk but asked you to find her a therapist. It breaks your heart that she is struggling so much. You can see she needs help to release herself from those negative beliefs. She needs help to set her boundaries and maybe find a new perspective but if you talk to her she shuts down. Then she feels guilt and shame for not being enough.

I aim to support women who are ready to are ready to live life on their terms. Clients come to me with a goal to feel peace and purpose. Most of the people I see are fed up with trying to please everyone else and don't know how to recognize, let alone meet, their own needs. They are ready to figure out who they are and what they genuinely want. In order to do this they need a neutral, supportive person to hear them out without forcing an outside agenda. They want to feel validated, understood, and empowered to create a life they can be proud of and surround themselves with people who accept them as they are.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Syracuse?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
