My background includes military service as a young man and a first career as a journalist.
Clients deserve and benefit from therapy that takes in the broad perspective of life. I help them with not just the immediate problem that brings them to therapy but with the potential they have to improve themselves and their place in the world. Many clients experience anxiety and depression, two common thieves of life's joy and promise. Clients need help seeing the horizon beyond such dark barriers. I use clinical skills and knowledge taken from a broad experience of life to guide clients. Given Utah's natural beauty, I add ecotherapy to my list of therapies. It's not only a pleasurable approach but a scientific one.

Life is a challenging adventure. I work best with people who are curious about getting unstuck and pursuing their goals. Whether it is stagnation in your career, challenges in your relationship, or anxiety about the many "what ifs" we face each day, asking questions and exploring possibilities provides a way forward. Learning more useful strategies to cope and engage with challenges will be a cornerstone of our work together.

Using CBT, we’ll identify negative thought patterns that prevent acceptance of the loss and ways to honor the lost loved one or accept the loss of a job or relationship.
You’ve recently experienced a loss that has been weighing heavily on you. It feels like things will never be the same, as if happiness and fulfillment are a distant memory. Whether it's the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a job, grief can consume you, making it hard to imagine life beyond the pain. There’s an overwhelming lack of focus and an inability to eat or sleep. You’re haunted by memories that once brought you happiness. Family and friends talk to you, but you can’t hear them. It feels like you no longer have a purpose and you’re convinced that things will never feel normal again.

Psychotherapy is Amy's second career and she came to it after spending two decades as a museum administrator and educator.
Amy helps you to find the insight you need so your story can make sense again. We can all become unsure of how we got to where we are, where we are headed, and even what would make things better. We become emotionally, relationally, and even physically stuck, reacting in ways that are ineffective at best, and often just plain counterproductive. Amy brings to therapy a number of different approaches to assist you in finding personal insight, motivation, and connection. She supports clients in the act of turning to their internal experience as a guide to forming connections, making decisions, moving through difficult experiences.

Are you a high-achieving professional struggling to maintain balance in your life? As someone in a demanding career, you might be juggling intense job pressures while trying to keep relationships, family, and your own sense of self intact. This constant strain can lead to overwhelming anxiety, emotional paralysis, and disconnect from yourself and others. You may feel stuck in repetitive patterns, going back to the same people to get your needs met, only to feel let down. But it doesn't have to be this way. There’s a path forward, one where you can reclaim your sense of self and purpose.

We are living in a crazy time. The uncertainty and intensity of the last several years are putting our mental health to the test. I work with clients who are going through interpersonal struggles (strained family dynamics, sex issues, divorce/break-ups, and navigating non-monogamy), faith transitions, depression, anxiety, and/or trauma. I love helping clients explore their gender and sexual identities, career possibilities, and relationship to substances/addiction. I work with adult individuals, couples, families, polycules, and groups.

Many times, we are put into confining boxes by people or systems who expect us to fit a certain mold in order to be accepted. Attempting to foster your authenticity while maintaining your relationships can be particularly challenging to navigate. I enjoy working with individuals who are facing identity, faith, career and other life transitions. While some clients choose to walk away from religious traditions, I respect my clients’ autonomy and support them no matter where their journeys take them.

Career Counseling Therapists

How do I know if I need career counseling?

Determining whether a career counselor is needed involves assessing one's current career and identifying what changes can be made to improve one's overall quality of life. In particular, feelings of loss of motivation, fatigue, anxiety, depression, procrastination, or ongoing levels of high stress can all be indicative of a need for career-related counseling. In addition, individuals changing jobs may want the decision-making support or self-reflection opportunities provided by a career counselor.

Who can benefit from career counseling?

Anyone can benefit from the self-reflection, skill development, and stress management techniques that career counseling can provide. However, individuals who are feeling overwhelmed or burnt out with their current job and individuals considering a major career change may particularly benefit from career counseling to improve their wellbeing. Additionally, individuals who are facing issues in their current job, such as coworker relationship challenges or not meeting performance goals, may benefit from the perspective that a career counselor can provide. College-age or young professionals may also uniquely benefit from career counseling as they make key decisions surrounding education and job training that will impact their career trajectory.

How long does career counseling typically last?

The length of career counseling can vary greatly depending on the needs of the individual and what type of support they are seeking. Career coaching or advising services—which serve clients in a specific, goal-oriented capacity—often last for a shorter duration and are sometimes only a single session or a few sessions in length. In contrast, career counseling as part of a more integrative therapeutic relationship with a counselor may last longer, particularly if the issues faced by the client are longstanding and/or more complex in nature; in such cases, individuals may expect therapy to last multiple months or longer.

How to prepare for career counseling?

Clients can prepare for career counseling sessions by outlining the specific topics they would like to address with the counselor, such as current job challenges or hopes for the future of their career. Compiling one's thoughts on such topics often requires reflection on one's career and future goals, which in itself can be beneficial for session preparation. Clients may also want to put together a list of questions they would like to ask the counselor, particularly if the career counselor they are seeing has particular expertise in a given career area. Conducting research into potential future jobs, training opportunities, or support resources in one's area may also help clients prepare for career counseling by providing them with a background of what resources are available in their area.
