I can help you with depression, anxiety, trauma resolution, fears, stress management, religious issues, breaking bad habits, grief & loss, pain management, sports perfor mance and more.
A quote I like from Oliver Wendell Holmes- "The most important thing in this world is not so much where we stand, but in what direction we are moving". Life is something to be enjoyed, not just something to struggle through! I believe that finding our happiness and fulfillment is a skill, an "ability" that lies within each of us. I believe you possess the solutions to your problems and my job is to help you discover those solutions. I have a strong orientation in Brief Solution Focused Therapy, searching with you for solutions to your problems with a very positive, time sensitive and forward looking approach.

I have always been interested in people’s stories, understanding how they see the world as they do, and how they have overcome challenges. Each of us has a rich, often complicated history that led us to the present moment. As a psychologist, it is an honor and privilege to get to know my patients’ histories, understand what got them here, and help them to be who they want to be in the world.

I come from a military background and family. Which means I have lived in so many places. I feel this contributed to my love of diversity, in both my professional and personal life. I also am very passionate about healing from issues as much as possible as opposed to just coping with them. I am pretty unique in my approach in that way.

I'm comfortable with discomfort and normalizing what is, after all, simply the "hu man condition".
For me it comes down to living POWERFULLY by accepting full responsibility for our lives. In that comes freedom. Freedom from addiction and compulsion. Freedom from self hate. Freedom from toxic relationships. Freedom to "respond" rather than "react". Freedom to live in accordance with our OWN values such that, at the end of the day, we're good with ourselves. I'm inspired by such COURAGE on a regular basis. We've all got "stuff". At some point, the question is, "what're we gonna DO about it?" It's a great privilege to do this work. Note: I am not in a position to provide crisis services.

I have four specialties: 1) helping heal and deepen relationships through Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, 2) helping people understand and reduce chronic anxiety, 3) overcoming stuck places of emotional shutdown and low motivation, and 4) healing religious or spiritual wounds, including trauma and neglect. All four of these specialties have a common goal; to help you discover your most authentic self. Living as your authentic self is an experience of presence, inspiration, strength, compassion, confidence and self-awareness. It's a place of connection - to yourself, to other people, and to something larger than us.

Running, pickleball, tennis, golf, and basketball are my go-to activities, as well as spending time with my favorite hu mans, my family!.
Since graduating with a Master's in Social Work from the University of Utah in 1999, I have been actively involved in encouraging clients on the path to healthy change. I believe that every person possesses the ability to solve their own problems. My role as a therapist is to ask the right questions, encourage and celebrate each courageous step in the change process, and provide a non-judgmental space for that change.

Life is difficult sometimes and can feel overwhelming, lonely, or sad. I have felt that way as well during parts of my life. It’s difficult not to have the multi faceted parts of our lives take a toll on our mental health. Grief, loss, addiction, and trauma are all part of my story. However, the stories we believe to be true of ourselves and others are capable of being rewritten. The important factor is identifying through discovery and support of how YOU are the author. Therapy isn't as much learning skills to overcome mental health issues as it is unlearning carried shame, guilt, and negative beliefs to become an emboldened you.

As long as the weather is decent many of our video sessions I will be sitting outside, as that is where I like being.
As interesting of a person as I might be, within therapy you are the focus. I am here to assist you. Within sessions I support your growth, your learning, your clarity. Sessions often include some humor, humility (because we are all learning and growing when it comes to life), perspective taking and practicing being okay while sorting things out.

There are many challenges facing us in our world today. Having the ability to recognize when we need some extra support and the willingness to seek it is essential. My clinical experience over the last 20 years allows me to use my education and life experience to provide a safe place for us to work through these life challenges. Throughout my career, I have worked with adults and adolescents in a variety of systems: foster care, probation, drug court, residential, crisis intervention, and in-home.

I specialize in working with anxieties, depression, trauma, as well as with teens and parents. I’ve worked with kids most of my life in one form or another doing therapy, mentoring, and teaching English abroad. Whatever is bothering you I’m here to help. LGBTQ friendly. I believe in giving the best available treatment that’s backed up by research (CBT, ACT, trauma-focused care, etc.) and then match your needs to these therapies that fit your personality and lifestyle.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
