I utilize EMDR, CBT, Mindfulness, DBT, IFS and ACT therapy.
Life can be hard with feelings of depression, anxiety, addiction, and trauma. I know that it can often feel overwhelming, and it is easy to feel stuck. I also know that by being heard and validated, by learning new strategies to cope, and by understanding how trauma impacts each of us, that life can get better and can be rewarding. You don't have to be defined by your past and there is always hope for better days. At Best Life Therapy I want to help you understand who you are, that you have value, and that you matter.

As a trauma specialist, I use both the most cutting edge trauma treatment modalities of EMDR, IFS, mindful self compassion, and somatic awareness, as well as energy-based and alternative modalities such as (hands off) reiki, crystals, and other energy methods.
Religious trauma. Spiritual abuse. Religious deconstruction. Recovery from purity culture. I have specialized in women with complex trauma for the last eight years, and in the last few years have added a religious trauma certification (from GCRR) to my list of specialties. Like other forms of trauma, religious trauma often manifests as anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships. I mostly work with women, but I am an ally to the LGBTQ community as well. My goal for my clients is to help them untangle the web of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that keep them feeling stuck.

I am trained in ( EMDR) and I also have experience using aspects of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Relapse Prevention Therapy (RPT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
One of my goals with therapy is to help others find meaning in their lives. It can be difficult when one feels as if they are not healthy emotionally or mentally. I work to have a good natured approach and strong connection that can help me assist clients in finding positive aspects in themselves and in building resiliency and strength. I have worked with a wide-ranging populace of clients and have expertise in working with trauma. I believe that the key to good therapy is the relationship, and I am a person-centered therapist, yet I work with any different modalities, depending on each individuals needs.

My approach is influenced by IFS, ACT, and EMDR.
You've been pushing along for so long, just trying to get by. Struggling with managing your emotions, you find yourself withdrawing, having less patience for those you are closest to. Perhaps being intimate and close with your partner feels impossible, or is painful and unfulfilling. You've noticed yourself questioning if those difficult experiences you thought you had dealt with are actually impacting you. What you are feeling is valid and deserves a space to be heard and healed. Each person's path to wholeness is unique. Let's help you heal, feel more connected, and find the peace you deserve.

I believe your treatment needs to be as unique as you are! To guide our work, I use your intuitive sense about what you need from therapy, and a personalized combination of tools that work best for you. The main modalities I use are EMDR, IFS ('Parts Work'), art therapy, mindfulness, and somatic tools. I also use mind-body science to address mental health from a holistic view, including movement, sleep, nutrition, nature, and learning about your nervous system. When working with children, I generally use art therapy, play therapy, and sandtray therapy. My trained therapy dog Pippin (hypoallergenic) attends sessions as well!

I am accepting new clients! I recognize the importance of connection, safety and trust within the therapeutic relationship. Brene Brown wrote, "Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light". Shame diminishes that light within us and tells us we are not worthy. We feel broken. It is in this brokenness that we can find strength, just as the Japanese art of Kintsugi does. I use an evidenced based eclectic approach which includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ( EMDR).
For the past 11 years, I have worked with adolescents and their families in residential treatment and outpatient therapy. This time has only deepened my empathy and understanding for individuals that endure very difficult life circumstances. I admire those seek help and healing. A strong relationship is the foundation of therapy. I am especially skilled at building the trust necessary to address complex behavioral and emotional issues. I especially enjoy helping children, adolescents, and their parents create safety in their homes, improve communication, change negative patterns, and believe that they can heal.

Trauma and PTSD are addressed through EMDR.
I strongly believe in the facet of the human spirit which is indomitable. This quality traverses culture and ethnicity, and so often plays a major role in recovery. The concept of radical acceptance invites individuals to embrace a regret of the past and fear of the future as part of the human experience while discovering what they truly value as they achieve treatment goals working toward sustainable mental health. As individuals learn to accept the fear that accompanies risk, the journey towards healing is a remarkable one to witness and, for me, is the true payoff as a therapist.

I use a trauma informed, holistic approach with EMDR, Brainspotting, and IFS at the forefront of treatment.
The challenges we face as individuals, as a community, and as a society can have a profound impact on the way we view the world, ourselves and others. Exposure to multiple adverse life experiences over time (experienced directly or in anticipation of adverse experiences) can progressively increase symptoms of anxiety, depression, clinical, and sub-clinical PTSD and even impact the state and health of our bodies. Adverse life experiences are often stored in the body and can be coded to our DNA. Somatic forms of therapy such as EMDR and Brainspotting help to adjust this lens by integrating and fully reprocessing adverse experiences.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
