Since 2015 I have been helping individuals and families in need of therapy for, family issues, depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction and more.  This is an opportunity for you to get help in an empathetic, nonjudgmental, casual, and knowledgeable atmosphere.  I believe life changing therapy begins with addressing mental, physical and spiritual health. We will work on skills for all three of these key areas. Along the way you can heal from trauma and learn amazing skills to unload what isn't helpful and start doing what is helpful.  When I'm not working I enjoy family time, sports, the outdoors, fitness and learning.

Feeling emotionally safe and connected to a partner is a hu man need, which is why being in a difficult relationship can be so agonizing. You see your partner every day, the one you desperately want to feel loved by, and yet no matter how hard you try, your attempts at connection end in rejection, or a fight. You want so badly to be heard, to feel cherished. But instead you feel alone and not good enough. You wonder why the two of you can’t seem to get it right, and if maybe you just aren’t meant to be together. Although your situation may seem hopeless, there is a path back to connection. Conflict is not caused by lack of love.

Life often causes deep troubled feelings: depression and anxiety, self-doubt and insecurity, tense fights in relationships, and emotional distance with loved ones. We feel hurt, put down, and wounded by those around us. We feel we don’t measure up, that our feelings don’t matter, and we have way more flaws than strengths. All these things are related to ONE thing: We have self-defeating habits of thinking and inadequate skills for working through deep troubled emotions. All these can be shifted and healed with the RIGHT kind of help so that you feel greater joy and peace in your life and harmony and closeness in your relationships.

For most people, the end of the work day is a relief. But as the sun sets out your office window, and you put on your jacket to leave, all you can feel is your anxiety growing. You know that another miserable restless night awaits. Soon you’ll be at the mercy of racing thoughts, uncontrollable worry, and the extreme loneliness of feeling like the only one awake in a world asleep. You get up each morning feeling more exhausted than the last. You can’t concentrate at work, and you’ve been irritable and distant with your family. You know that if you could just get some good sleep, you’d feel like yourself again, but it seems hopeless.

How to choose the right therapist? Consider asking yourself these questions: What do I need to feel more hope and motivation in my life? Can my relationship be "fixed", or should we move on? Do I feel like I don’t quite fit in and nobody understands me? How do I break free from making the same decisions over and over? Do I wish I had someone to talk to about thoughts, feelings, and behavior I don’t really want anyone to know about?

I know it takes courage and humility to seek help, but after many years of helping sexual addicts and seeing hundreds recover, I can assure you that you can be free.
I am a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT), certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist (EFT), and certified EMDR therapist. Using secure encrypted video conferencing I specialize in helping individuals struggling with sexual addiction/compulsion and their partners, especially those for whom in-person therapy is impossible due to their geographical location or lack of skilled therapists where they reside. Following telehealth regulations my focus is on helping individuals in the two states where I am licensed, Utah and Massachusetts.

So many others like you have made the call and transformed their life forever.
I know finding a good therapist can be challenging. Without a direct referral, you may feel you don't have a clear direction. Since 1987 I have helped others overcome challenges in order to live a happier, more fulfilling life. Here is one client's experience ... "I needed help, hope and healing ... Dr. Steven Chen's congenial manner and professional expertise created an atmosphere that assisted my healing and wholeness."

The best way to contact me is via email. I work with adolescents and young adults ages 13-40 experiencing anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships. I help individuals learn skills that help them regulate emotions in order to improve social relationships and daily function. My approach is a relational style of conversation to help individuals feel safe and willing to share about personal struggles. We then work together to increase insight and self-awareness through identifying negative behavioral patterns and building from innate strengths which helps one’s ability to make changes that improve their overall quality of life.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
