Trauma and EMDR are my passions due to personal experiences with PTSD and the healing I’ve witnessed and experienced through EMDR. I have worked with individuals in a generalized practice experience including anxiety, depression, OCD, suicidality, childhood abuse, etc... Am gaining an increased skill level with those who have experienced PTSD, complex PTSD, Dissociative Disorders (general), & Dissociative Identity Disorder. Attachment Theory, Adaptive Information Processing Model, Polyvagal Theory and Systems Theory are the bases from which I work.

My approach is at once welcoming and easy, and also structured from the beginning, and my primary specialty is EMDR.
My typical client is seeking relief from their painful past, however recent or remote, and a clearer path in the present and future. That includes mostly individuals, but also many couples that are looking to repair relationships, harmed by individual trauma or other circumstances.

I am EMDR trained and love to help those stuck in the past.
Hi! I’m Marki and I want to be your new therapist! I’m kind, compassionate, and sassy. If that sounds like your kind of therapist then read on my friend. I’ve found that everyone wants to belong to something. Many of us spend years searching for what that is without realizing it already exists. I’m passionate about helping people find where they belong and how to use that to fulfill their purpose in life. I love helping others to be vulnerable and working through shame (it sucks, but you gotta do it). I believe it’s vital to implement self compassion in your life as well as introducing productive change that YOU are in charge of.

Using EMDR and other Cognitive Behavioral techniques, I can help you reprocess those past experiences so they are not so disturbing and have such a powerful hold over you.
Sometimes one becomes stuck in destructive cycles or unhealthy patterns learned in childhood. Maybe it was neglect, abuse, or a chaotic environment due to a parent figure so wrapped up in their own trauma, they were unable to be there for you. Or maybe a more recent trauma (an accident, sexual assault, military experiences, etc.) is bothering you. And no matter how hard you try to numb and suppress the past, it has a way of dictating your present behaviors and affecting the way you feel about yourself and function in relationships today.

I use talk therapy and EMDR.
Anger and Anxiety have you feeling out of control and threatening to ruin your relationships. It seems to come out of nowhere and you spend a lot of time and energy, back tracking and trying to make amends. At the end of the day, you want to do better and be better. I help MEN who struggle with anger learn how to manage their emotions so they can have better relationships at home and a work.

Using EMDR, you will learn to manage your emotions and understand your feelings.
You always know you're triggered because you can't stop the emotions from coming out. You are once again reminded your reactions are more than the norm. Your so-called "big emotions" are getting in the way of your relationships and your relationship with yourself. You feel tired and are not sure if hope is something you can reach for, but you know you will continue to push on soon, just as you always have done. You push through your feelings, trying to set them aside until they bubble over when you least expect them to. You're not sure what to do.

Have you ever felt ashamed? Ever felt like others don’t understand you, but say they do? Those have been my own experiences and have led me to work with people in recovery and their families, survivors of domestic violence/abuse, minority communities and teens. I come from a multi-cultural family with an immigrant parent which has both enriched my life and created unique struggles for me. These experiences, however, have helped me empathize with a wide variety of people and situations. My goals are to support my clients as they navigate their struggles and find hope and strength within themselves.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
