We all experience difficult times. Keeping it together can be challenging and oftentimes working with a therapist is just what’s needed. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed, or you’ve been through a traumatic experience, therapy can help. If you're undergoing a major life change such as divorce, or faith transition, having someone you trust to talk with can make a big difference.

The clients I see are familiar with pain. They want life and/or relationships to be better. They often seek understanding of themselves and respond affirmatively to guidance, empathy, and support. They come to improve the way they see and treat themselves. They come to find and/or restore their inner resilience. They want to increase coping skills, develop self-compassion and courage, and enhance their interpersonal skill and confidence.

We all experience life’s journey in unique ways. In every path we come across obstacles, form relationships, experience loss, misunderstanding, confusion, anger, and dismay. But we also experience happiness, hope, love and connection. We use these experiences to make meaning and find purpose. However, we, our relationships, and this world are constantly changing. It can be hard to communicate our true meaning or trust that when we do, we will be heard.

I have 11 years of total experience working with high risk adolescents who have struggled with addiction, anxiety based disorders, depression, PTSD and parent child relationship conflict. However, I also see couples, adults and have found enjoyment in helping parents learn better ways to work with their children who struggle considerably emotional distress. I believe that therapy is intended to locate the cause of distress rather than coping only. Proper treatment begins with proper diagnosis. People desire to find a way to get what they want in a healthy and appropriate way.

It might include managing anxiety, learning self compassion, using nature and body movement to work through trauma, or learning how to change a behavior that is keeping you stuck.
Has traditional therapy not given you the changes you’ve wanted? Have you struggled to find the causes of your anxiety, stress, and depression? Do overthinking and life changes affect your overall quality of life? I believe it shouldn’t be so complicated to have a better life. I have over ten years experience helping people find the root causes of their anxiety and depression by looking at core beliefs and how those inform patterns in thinking and behavior. I will teach you how to practice self compassion, and gain understanding from the inside out. My approach is informed by Eastern philosophy and mindful-based interventions.

Feeling emotionally safe and connected to a partner is a hu man need, which is why being in a difficult relationship can be so agonizing. You see your partner every day, the one you desperately want to feel loved by, and yet no matter how hard you try, your attempts at connection end in rejection, or a fight. You want so badly to be heard, to feel cherished. But instead you feel alone and not good enough. You wonder why the two of you can’t seem to get it right, and if maybe you just aren’t meant to be together. Although your situation may seem hopeless, there is a path back to connection. Conflict is not caused by lack of love.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
