Are you dealing with anxiety, stress, or sadness? Or is constant worrying making it difficult to get things done? If so, I get it. When you’re struggling with your mental health, sometimes just getting through the day is a challenge. Processing trauma can be even more difficult, especially when you feel like you’re tackling it alone. That’s where I come in. My name is Jae and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). As your therapist, it’s my job to help you through life's tough chapters and empower you to be your happiest, healthiest self.

I know what it's like to struggle with the challenges of family, aging, grief, divorce, loss, anxiety, relationships, life transitions, career, self fulfillment and purpose. Married for over 44 years, having owned a family business, I learned firsthand how to find purpose and peace in the midst of stress, confusion, loss, anxiety and grief. I draw on personal experiences of raising children, marriage, owning a business, aging parents, loss of loved ones, major life transitions, depression, anxiety, addiction and stress. These life experiences give me a unique understanding and ability to help clients overcome similar challenges.

I had the experience that many others have had of going to therapy at a young age and finding it to be lacking. Very rarely was I asked what I wanted or what I believed would help me. For a long time, no one taught me how to trust my own voice. Now, I believe the greatest goal of counseling is to achieve a stronger relationship of trust and love with yourself. That is why I use evidence-based & trauma-informed therapy models to guide our work together, but you will always remain the expert of your life. I want to help you learn to hear, understand, and trust your own voice.

My goal is to create a welcoming and safe environment for individuals as they begin their healing process. Together we will utilize a strength-based perspective, creating an individualized approach that fosters growth, while respecting each client’s personal values and beliefs. I believe that each person’s path to healing is unique and should happen at a pace that feels comfortable and natural.

As someone who has lived with the symptoms of anxiety and depression for years, I know how difficult life can be when these things weigh you down. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be so. I am experienced in applying therapeutic skills that I personally know to be powerful in alleviating suffering and improving lives. While my therapeutic background is in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), I am experienced in working within an eclectic therapeutic framework, and I call on various methods as necessary. I enjoy working with both teens and adults, and I also work well with LGBTQ+ clients.

Every individual is unique, like a puzzle. Sometimes we are unable to see the bigger picture, have missing pieces, or otherwise feel incomplete. I work to help you find the missing pieces and envision the bigger picture.

I'm basically a down-to-earth, laid-back Psychologist that's easy to talk to and believes that you are the expert on yourself. I like to set a relaxed atmosphere; one where it's okay to get into deep material, but also laugh and enjoy our time together. Together we can work to untangle the anxiety, depression, and/or trauma of life and bring about hope for a brighter future. I like to spend the full 60 min with my people; thus, I am going back to back with little time for a break. As such, I rely heavily on my support people to help with emails and phone calls.

One of the most challenging and stressful things we face in life are the emotional and behavioral problems of our children. These difficulties impact not only the success of the child but the overall happiness within our home, our marital relationships and life itself can become wearisome and unmanageable. We may begin to wonder if there is “hope” for improvement or even may feel like “what’s wrong with us.” In the effort to find relief or comfort, we may find ourselves drawn to self-defeating and even destructive behaviors that offer immediate yet temporary relief. There are other options. I offer just this to my clients.

We all want fulfillment or to be content and we often struggle to be that way. Our life experiences, culture(s), and development contribute to ways of thinking, feeling, and living. Add adverse or traumatic experiences to those influences and we seldom escape without reinforced negative beliefs about ourselves or the world. These beliefs can be right in our faces or very subtlety prodding at our subconscious. Either way, this is where we all need help and guidance.

As a gay man, I validate and support clients’ identities, sexuality, and spiritual beliefs. I was raised LDS and understand the cultural, familial, social, and spiritual complexities that can arise from growing up in that environment. I focus on helping clients heal from shame-based trauma, improve their relationship skills, and build a life that is consistent with their sexuality, gender identity, goals, and values.

I have worked in the social work field for more than 30 years. I have worked with adults and children in inpatient psychiatric hospitals, hospital emergency department crisis, and 21 years in the juvenal justice system. I believe in Self-Determination Theory, an individual’s ability to make choices and manage their own life, and Person-Centered Therapy (a form of talk therapy) where the client (you) is believed to be the expert of your life and therefore you lead the direction of your therapy. I use many different modalities of evidence-based treatment including CBT, motivational interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy.

Anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma, are heavy burdens. You need not struggle with the burden alone. They are all human feelings and at times we need someone with a willing and experienced ear to listen and help guide us through the process of changing to find happiness that can be in our life. I also have extensive experience in couples and family therapy. Let's meet. In addition, if domestic violence is your issue, PLEASE call NOW! Even if my schedule is full I will make time.

We all have an inherent need to make sense of our lives. Psychotherapy addresses this by becoming aware of our unconscious (unaware) patterns. Freud coined the term "repetition compulsion" by which we can unknowingly repeat past experiences. In essence, we want to change but cling to what's familiar. Long-term psychotherapy is my preference as it provides the necessary time and safety for these dynamics to emerge and therefore create freedom if desired.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
