I have been a practicing therapist for over 35 years and still love what I do. I specialize in depression, anxiety and marital problems for adults and teens. I have a had a lot of success with cognitive-behavioral therapy but borrow from many different therapies. I really believe in mindfulness meditation and I practice it and teach it to my clients. After practicing for so many years I have a lot of confidence in what I do. I am willing to take on the most difficult cases. Give me a try and I will not let you down.

Not accepting new clients
Hu man beings are meant to experience a full range of emotion.
***Not accepting new clients at this time*** Trauma is timeless. Even though it happened a long time ago, it can feel as though it is happening now. Trauma can negatively impact every part of your life. Even a simple trip to the grocery store can feel overwhelming. Work can feel impossible and few people understand. I feel a special connection to anyone with trauma because I have experienced trauma of my own. You are going to feel cared for and validated.

I have experience with many mental health disorders and have worked with people from ages 10-80 on an array of personal and relational issues that are keeping clients stuck.
I enjoy helping clients who feel stuck with some aspect of their life get unstuck and experience more joy and peace. I like getting to the heart of issues as efficiently as possible so we can begin working on finding answers and solutions. This process begins by discussing the challenges a client is facing and noticing areas of strong emotion. From there, we explore those strong emotions and note what core issues might be driving these feelings. It's a powerful process of discovery that helps bring complex issues into focus.

I conduct long-term therapy process groups for those who want to work on connecting with their emotions, with other people, and with themselves in meaningful and life changing ways. The process groups I run don’t focus on a particular topic, but people in these groups work on such things as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and relationship problems. I am currently not taking new individual or couples therapy clients, but do have openings for new group therapy clients. I have groups for adults and licensed therapists.

I believe we can partner in our work together in helping you develop the capacities you need to manage both life's joys and difficulties, while building a more purposeful and meaningful life.
I came to Woodhaven with a wealth of life experience in both the arts and hu man services. Working as a professional musician for many years connected me to some of the most vulnerable populations including the aging, chronically ill and those experiencing grief and sadness. I learned that creativity and healing are intimately linked and you invariably need one to pursue the other. My unique path has given me valuable insight into the hu man experience, which is something that we all share. I am particularly interested in the innate ability we all have to strive towards hope and healing.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
