As a recovering people pleaser myself, I know it’s scary. I know it’s uncomfortable. But so is what you’re doing now. Avoiding certain people, dreading conversation topics, feeling anxious before social events, overcommitting your time and energy, prioritizing other people’s feelings over your own, and letting everyone sip your cup dry - now thats fucking hard. How much more enjoyable, comfortable, and free would your life be in you knew your needs would be respected?

I know therapy can sometimes be intimidating or frightening to begin, so my goal as a therapist is to create a safe and welcoming environment for you to share what is most troubling in your life. I will work in collaboration with you to help reach your goals and enhance the strengths you already possess. This is in addition to teaching you skills to help you feel more in control of your life. I am a certified clinical trauma professional and am also trained in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, an evidenced-based trauma therapy to reduce trauma symptoms.

Have you ever felt as though it was hard to ask for help, whether it was with something small that happens in life, or perhaps when more complicated situations arise? What about when those distressing thoughts just “pop” into your mind, and the uncomfortable feelings occur? It can be very uncomfortable, and even exhausting, to try to cope with those thoughts and feelings. Maybe you’ve fallen into some habits that you would like to talk about and understand better, or even change but are unsure about how to start. Or maybe you’re going through a significant loss or a change. Do you feel like you just aren’t yourself these days?

Too many life stressors may lead to unfocused work and/or frequent "crisis management" interventions. In collaboration, we identify presenting issues, prioritize problems, and clarify treatment goals for positive changes. I offer brief treatment (8-12 sessions) and long-term therapy (6 months+). For brief treatment, the average number of sessions needed is typically 8-12. For complex and persistent issues, more sessions might be needed. By maintaining congruence, genuineness, and unconditional warm regard, I build a trusting and supportive relationship with you.

Seeking solutions to enact change? Are you done with worksheets, breathing exercises and lack of concrete action steps? Examining problems requires help of an honest, direct, solution focused clinician with a concrete approach. Anxiety, co-dependent patterns ("people pleasing") or just trying to understand an experience to determine next steps look different when explored thru a "curious" approach. Every focused, achieving individual wants to "fix it" or do whatever it takes to feel better to live better. A solution focused approach operates on reason and concrete actions to take fostering hope.

I work with individuals and couples who are struggling with grief and loss, processing and healing from trauma, managing depression and anxiety symptoms, low self-esteem, managing difficult life or cross cultural transitions, and sexual intimacy and connection. I take a person-centered approach to therapy where existential themes and mindfulness practices are incorporated into the therapeutic healing model of exploration, insight, and action.

Do you frequently think “what’s wrong with me?” or “no one likes me" or "the world is completely against me”. Does everything feels like an uphill battle or a heavy weight on your shoulders? Maybe you feel empty all the time, or like you have a lump in your throat. Perhaps you keep on making the same mistakes. Mistakes that cause you, and at times others, hurt. If any of this resonates with you, first off, realize that nothing is "wrong" with you. You need a non-judgmental ear who gets where you are coming from, can help guide you through these feelings, and give you tools and hope.

While I'm open to who comes to me, I have found myself working mostly with adults—primarily men, both straight and gay—who are navigating challenges such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, life transitions, or relationship difficulties. They may feel stuck or overwhelmed and are seeking to understand the deeper emotional roots of their struggles. Their goal is to gain insight into patterns that may be holding them back and to develop healthier ways of coping. They want to find authenticity in their lives, overcoming self-defeating thoughts and behaviors to achieve personal growth and a more fulfilling life.

Ever feel like you're stuck on a mental treadmill? You try to focus, but tasks take forever. Sleep feels like a luxury, your home is chaotic, and interactions with loved ones leave you emotionally drained. The inner critic is relentless, reminding you of all the "shoulds" and "could-have-beens." Maybe you're forgetful, anxious, and overwhelmed. You've started wondering if you might have ADHD. Work feels overwhelming, relationships are tense, and you're left questioning if you'll ever truly get it "together. As a skills-based therapist, I believe we can work together to "hack" your brain and unlearn those unwanted thought patterns.

My name is Susan. I have been practicing, in Pennsylvania for 25 years. I have my LCSW. The bulk of my career was spent in an atypical long term care facility. Clients ranged from 18 to 100 with a myriad of mental health challenges. In this setting, I provided one to one therapy and facilitated groups. Group work consisted of anger management, chronic illness and improving interpersonal skills. Going into private practice, my role in the partnership is the provision of a judgment free environment where we can strategize, addressing and overcoming the many challenges we all face.

Even if you've done this before, it's not always an easy decision to find a therapist. I appreciate that you're taking this step toward finding someone you feel might be a good fit. Therapy is most successful when a person feels some connection with their therapist. I take a down-to-earth, supportive, conversational approach that, especially at first, helps sessions feel comfortable and allows some time for us to get to know each other. I believe how we see ourselves is rooted in our history and that it can be powerful to identify ways we learned to think about ourselves and others.

United Medical Resources (UMR) Therapists

Does insurance cover therapy, prescriptions and other behavioral health services?

In general, yes. Laws in the U.S. require insurers to cover essential behavioral health care at the same level as other health care services. Most health plans require a medical diagnosis and treatments that are evidence based and medically essential. This means that life coaching and alternative therapies are not covered, nor is therapy without a diagnosis. Call the number on the back or your insurance card or visit your insurance company's website to review your Summary of Benefits. If you have insurance through your employer, your Human Resources department may also be able to answer questions.

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

The cost of therapy depends on your region, how much training and experience your therapist has, and the type of treatment. The rate for talk therapy generally falls between $100 and $250. For a client seeing an in-network provider, the cost of therapy is often similar to the cost of other health care services. Clients pay co-pays and may need to satisfy a plan’s deductible before benefits kick in.

What is the difference between In-Network and Out-of-Network insurance coverage?

An in-network provider has contracted with an insurer to get paid directly for services, and to accept the insurer’s rate of compensation. Clients are responsible for deductibles and copays. If a therapist is out of network, that means that the client pays the therapist directly for services at the therapist’s regular fee. Out-of-Network providers often give clients a receipt so that they can file for partial reimbursement with their insurance company.

Is it difficult to find an In-Network therapist?

It is not unusual for therapists to limit the number of insurance patients in their practice, so it’s important to check in-network availability when you schedule your first appointment. In regions and times where therapy is in high demand it may take longer to get scheduled with an in-network therapist.

What is the difference between HMO and PPO insurance plans?

HMO health plans only cover in-network services, there is no reimbursement for out-of-network providers. PPO plans often cover both in- and out-of-network services, though the client may pay more for out-of-network services.

What is a Superbill?

A superbill is a receipt for therapy services. It provides all the information required by insurance companies to reimburse you for out-of-network services, including the diagnostic codes for your care, the amount paid, and the dates and duration of care.

Does insurance cover Online therapy?

Many therapists who shifted their practice to online therapy during the pandemic have kept that arrangement. And most insurers continue to cover telehealth services, with a few exceptions. Preventive care (such as an annual depression screening) is often required to be in-person to be covered, and some states require prescribers of controlled substances to see those patients in person.

Does insurance cover Group therapy?

Many insurance plans provide coverage for group therapy provided there is a medical diagnosis for group members, but there are some noteworthy exceptions. For example, Medicare does not always cover group therapy. Group therapy tends to cost less than individual therapy.

Does insurance cover Couples therapy?

Most insurance companies do not cover the cost of couples therapy because there is no medical diagnosis or medically necessary treatment. However, a few plans will offer a limited benefit, so it is still worth checking with your insurance company. Sometimes therapy is covered for a couple when one person has a diagnosis and another family member joins them for joint therapy, but it is considered therapy for the medical condition that includes a family member as a listener or helper, not couples counseling. Without insurance, most clients pay between $100-300 per 60-90 min session for couples therapy. Often clients can find classes or workshops that make it more affordable to work on their relationship. And some employers offer benefit plans that help defray the cost of couples therapy.
