with my clients, I have witnessed the impressive power of the mind to heal itself from trauma, grief, phobias, anxiety, unwanted habits/behaviors, low self-esteem/self-doubt, and more.
With over 13 years’ experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor, I enjoy having the opportunity to help people make significant changes in their lives. Something unique about my practice is that I offer traditional counseling as well as a short-term therapy option called Accelerated Resolution Therapy (A.R.T.), which targets specific problems in just 1 to 5 sessions. A.R.T. is a powerful research-backed therapy that has garnered numerous testimonials from satisfied clients. A.R.T. uses eye movements similar to EMDR, but is more directive, guiding clients through each step. As a result, A.R.T. achieves results in fewer sessions.

Stress, anxiety, grief, trauma and depression can prevent us from living our best life.
Relationships are complicated, and we all need someone to occasionally help us make sense of our current situation. I am committed to working with high school and college students as well as women of all ages. Women face unique issues and experiences. Motherhood, work and school stress, family conflict, self-doubt, and other problems can add up. Come spend some time taking care of yourself when the demands of life become overwhelming. Learning healthy communication and coping skills can really make a difference for many people. The right therapy after a traumatic event is essential. I am trauma trained in EMDR therapy.

I create a safe environment where your teen or child can encounter and navigate the burdens they carry - trauma, anxiety, anger, communication difficulties - and recognize their inherent strengths and abilities.
Navigating life as a family brings so many unexpected challenges and obstacles. Whether these present as challenges for our little kids, teenagers, or us as parents, they are bound to occur. I start from the perspective that kids (and parents) do the best they can with what they have even when it is difficult to see. I use a collaborative, brain-body based perspective to understand how our stress response system interacts with behavior and habits. We are all capable of growth towards the best version of ourself and I offer support to children, teens, and parents as you build the family life and communication patterns you desire.

After completing a MA in Psychology at The State University of New York at New Paltz, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology at The University of South Dakota, I became certified in EMDR and trauma healing bodywork including Transforming Touch and Somatic Resilience and Regulation.
If you are someone struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, chronic health issues, addiction, trauma (shock, complex and/or attachment trauma), and/or having a hard time living life to its fullest, and you want a safe place to learn, grow and heal, I might be able to help. Sometimes talk therapy alone is enough to resolve whatever ails you, but when there is chronic stress or trauma that has persisted in the mind/body for a prolonged period, therapies that take a "bottom up" approach can have more of a lasting impact.

I like to work with clients of all ages who have experienced trauma.
I believe that our thoughts have so much power over who we are and where we are in life, and changing a person’s thoughts can empower and promote an individual in all aspects of life. Two of my strengths are empathy and being an encourager, which helps me to connect to others. I have training in EMDR and would like to work with those experiencing trauma of all ages. I have a special place in my heart for those suffering from grief, loss, and chronic disease. I was a Medical Assistant who worked with Oncology patients and saw the need for that population and their families to get counseling.

I have 13 years of experience helping youth and adults address ongoing struggles with anxiety, depression, academic challenges, ADHD, self-harm, childhood trauma, relationship challenges, and self-esteem.
Have you ever found yourself thinking, "Wow! I am really in over my head right now." or "Shouldn't I be able to figure this out?" What about questioning how others seem to manage while you feel like you're falling apart? I want to assure you that you're not alone in these thoughts and feelings. It's possible to find peace and confidence in yourself, even during challenging situations or crises, and to feel confident knowing you'll know what to do when difficult emotions and situations arise. Sometimes counseling can provide a little extra support to help you truly feel equipped to handle what life is throwing at you right now.

Hi! I'm Ashton and I'm glad you found me. I specialize in helping couples and individuals who are finding that their relationships are a big stressor in their life. Many of the clients I see are seeking counseling to improve communication skills and increase enjoyment and connectedness in their relationships. Clients who work with me often need help working through relationship betrayals and hurts that inevitably happen in relationships, but that can leave you feeling stuck. I use therapeutic modalities that help couples and individuals move past relationship patterns that no longer serve them into more stable ways of functioning.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
