It is my belief that we all have the capacity to experience freedom from whatever keeps us in bondage, be it anxiety, depression, guilt, grief, shame, addiction, or the lasting impact of traumatic life experiences. Whether it is a roadblock or simply a speed bump, my goal is to be able to come along side you, sit in the muck with you, and help you explore ways to overcome whatever you are struggling with.

Your teenager is yelling at you and you find yourself yelling back at them - again. When she isn’t angry at you, she is sulking or hiding in her bedroom, ears and mind tuned out with music and video games. You wish you felt closer to your teen and less frustrated with her. Is she carrying a heavy burden you don’t know about or just being a teenager with attitude? You just don't know how to help her.

Are you feeling stuck? Feeling like life should be more fulfilling and happier? Have these feelings been around for a while, and others don't seem to understand why you feel the way you do? Do you know you want something different but can't seem to create or stick with the changes? Are other people or parts of you making you feel guilty for what you want? Or are others saying you are too needy or sensitive, perhaps religion? Life shouldn't be such a painful or challenging endeavor. Learn to break co-dependency and love yourself. Break the cycle that can result in long-term consequences for your mental and physical well-being.

My passion as a therapist is to work with individuals to experience emotional, mental and spiritual freedom. Someone once asked me, ‘What would it look like for you to be free?’ I have learned that making the decision to turn toward painful experiences to process them paves the way of experiencing freedom. This first step is often scary, but the gain is much greater. My goal is to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with individuals built on honesty, trust and an unwavering alliance.

The white sand shatters the sunlight, seemingly taunting, ready to capture the rushing waves. We pause to frame and reflect on these elements at play. This ocean rushing-to-greet-the-land dance plays out in rhythm, repeatedly into the distance for as far as one can imagine. "How small am I?" We ponder. Questioning our purpose. Anxiety bubbles, so to speak, grow as we think about our future while making plans for class starts. Take hope in these moments, as noted inflection points mark the desire to change: to become the person you'd admire at seventy. Reach out this Fall. Let's make a plan together, and get in bloom.

I believe psychotherapy should be a transformational experience. We often get stuck in patterns of relating and being that, at one time, were adaptive and protective, but no longer help us to be our best selves. Psychotherapy helps to understand those patterns, develop strategies to disrupt them, and create new ways of being and relating that get us closer to our personal and professional goals.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
