I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, and navigating life changes, among others.
I see my role as being one who walks alongside you to help you navigate the twists and turns on the path of life. While working together I will be right here holding a lantern whenever we get to something that needs a little warm light shone on it. From a clinical perspective, my approach combines cognitive-behavioral, existential, solution-focused, and person-centered treatment modalities, all of which is to say, I treat the "whole person.

Our life experiences seem to shape how we think and feel about ourselves and the world. Together, we can explore ways that are right for you; to break free from limiting beliefs and habits that increase unhappiness, depression and anxiety. It is a fact that things are difficult for a lot of people in today's society and now more than ever it makes sense to get trained and experienced support.

I have experience working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, anger or impulse control, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and legal issues.
Life. Is. HARD. I personally feel like that isn’t talked about enough. I think we try to convince ourselves that we should not be struggling, or we feel guilty for struggling. Give yourself permission to vent and get some guidance. You need someone who will listen and not minimize your situation or your feelings. Asking for help does not mean that you are not capable of handling things on your own but sometimes it’s just easier to have someone listen and offer support. If you are struggling with figuring out this thing called life or you just had a change develop, I want to help you navigate those!

Each person who seeks counseling is on a unique journey with their own needs. We start by understanding what brings them to counseling and then set goals together. Every session may present different challenges, but we work on connecting everything we discuss, using techniques and strategies learned during our time together. This ensures that clients gain skills they can carry with them long after counseling ends.

As a therapist with a background in education, I have a deep understanding of the challenges children and adolescents face. My five years as a middle school teacher have shaped my approach, allowing me to support young people in building self-esteem, coping with bullying, and navigating their evolving worlds. I combine therapeutic practices such as play therapy, sandtray therapy, and coping skills training to create a safe space where pre-teens, teens, and families can thrive. I also work closely with adult women, helping them manage life transitions, reduce stress, and build healthier relationships.

We have all struggled at various times, perhaps lacking hope for the future. Whether it's working on difficult relationships, working through past issues or addictions, or simply needing a professional third party to help work through certain situations, counseling is a great place to start.

Are you worried about your child? Struggling with meltdowns, crying, yelling, or even aggressive outbursts? As a parent it breaks your heart to see your child so overwhelmed by their feelings. You know they feel things very deeply, but the dramatic highs and lows are exhausting. You wish they could calm themselves down and cope with big feelings well. Seeing your child so upset makes you feel like a failure as a parent. You worry their behavior keeps them from making friends. You long for peace and harmony in your home. Every book or person has a different idea of how to help. You feel lost and confused on what to do next.

After 30 years as an occupational therapist helping individuals overcome physical challenges, I returned to school to pursue my desire to become a licensed counselor. I believe that mental health is as important as physical ability and that it is never too late to pursue a dream. I believe that asking for help is a sign of strength rather than one of weakness.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
