Therapy is a partnership that grows in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. It allows one to rediscover the parts of selves which may have been disowned; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to one's own direct experience of the world. I nurture this collaboration with clients and recognize that within each of us there exists a deeper wisdom that, given adequate support, naturally moves toward healing and integration.

I have had the pleasure of learning so much about people to strengthen, encourage and educate others during life’s most challenging seasons.
So many people bombard us with cliches like “Life is what you make it” or “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” when the unexpected happens or we lose control of situations and ourselves. Not only does this usually make us feel worse and/or not heard, we usually do not know what those sayings even mean. I’m sure people typically mean well when using these phrases, however, we need practical remedies to the “cards we were dealt” in our personal lives. It’s rare that the average person listens to us, validates us, AND helps us process what’s happening so that we can wholeheartedly move on.

If you're struggling to live authentically, learning how to notice and acknowledge your stories with compassion and understanding can help.
Change, whether expected or unexpected, planned or unplanned, can disrupt our lives and make us feel off kilter, showing up as irritability, panic attacks, disrupted sleep, inability to concentrate, or problems with important people in our lives. Other times we simply feel "stuck." When reaching out to family or friends is no longer helpful, connecting with a professional can help.

If you or a loved one are struggling at work, school, or in relationships, a psychological assessment may be an important first step in any intervention plan. I have over 15-years experience in evaluating children, adolescents and adults with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, personality disorders, psychosis, trauma (physical and psychological), and learning disorders. I aim to help a person, his or her family, and/or outpatient treater to better understand the core issues, specifically those issues that are getting in the way of a person functioning productively in school, work, interpersonally, and/or emotionally.

Our quality of life is correlated with the quality of our relationships. Stress in relationships can be the main source of unhappiness, making us feel lonely, resentful, and exhausted. Conversely, healthy and secure relationships bring meaning, joy, and a sense of peace into our lives. Therapy can help us gain a sense of clarity and confidence when navigating relationship issues while maintaining our own sense of self. It helps us become mindful of keeping a balance between our own needs and the needs of others. This balance can greatly impact our experience of the self, and others in a positive way.

Life presents many circumstances that can be difficult for any person to navigate on their own. We aren’t born with the emotional regulation skills or coping skills needed to deal with the complexities of this fast-paced, high-pressure society. Some days we may be consumed with negative thoughts that hinder us from being who we want to be. Some days we are flooded with big emotions that are hard to control and seem to overpower us. Some days we experience worries that seem so big that it's hard for us to function.

Clients that I see often have noticed some of these: hurtful patterns that keep recurring, reactions to triggers that seem automatic and outside their control, boundaries that are difficult to keep, and/or stories of themselves that keep circulating in their head - even if they are untrue or hurtful. They want differently for themselves in such a deep way, but they aren't sure how to create the change and make it long-lasting. Traumas from their past might keep echoing in the present. Or they find themselves resentful or unhappy with their current relationships. ALL of these things can be improved. With work.

Education and Learning Disabilities Therapists

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
