Have you ever gone to a different country and not understood their native language? How difficult was it for you to get what you needed? Imagine you are a child, wanting to tell you what they are going through but cannot tell you in words. Play therapy is a language a child utilizes to express what cannot be vocalized. I am Whitney, trained to interpret this language to help you get the ease you need as a parent. You are a good parent, you are here; looking to do all you can for her child. Give me a call!

In this time of crisis and fear I am focusing my specialty practice on case consultation, licensure supervision, and training on trauma related disorders. After 40 years in the practice of psychotherapy with individuals and couples with trauma histories, and years of study and teaching other clinicians, I hope to contribute to the community of clinicians who want to continue to learn and deepen their understanding of the complex nature of our human adaptations to overwhelming life experience. I am a Fellow and on the Faculty of The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation since 2002.

My area of specialization focuses on looking at current difficulties in relationships or in becoming yourself. We look through the lens of one's own attachment history in order to understand how those responses and feelings are brought into current relationships in non-productive ways or ways that sabotage one’s own growth. In the past I worked extensively with young children and their parents so I typically focus on the impact those early experiences have on current relationships and how they manifest in spite efforts to change.

You are feeling tired, restless, antsy, empty, confused, and wanting to sort out the *stuff* in your head and heart. You want to find your footing in your family, or your marriage, or your parenting and yourself. You are done with doing things the same ol' way. You are reading these profiles asking yourself "who will hear me", "who will get me", or "who can I tell my story to?" I have good news, you are the expert of your own life and with that, you and I create a partnership and it is the foundation of our therapeutic alliance.

Therapy is a partnership that grows in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance. It allows one to rediscover the parts of selves which may have been disowned; to learn new skills to handle grief and distress; to build healthier, more nurturing relationships; and to gain access to one's own direct experience of the world. I nurture this collaboration with clients and recognize that within each of us there exists a deeper wisdom that, given adequate support, naturally moves toward healing and integration.

I love working with couples, individuals with complex trauma, and people who have been to therapy before and felt like it didn’t work! Whether you are a couple who longs to reclaim your connection, or you can’t even imagine a way forward, I hope you will consider reaching out. I also have lots of empathy for individuals who are recovering from abuse, neglect, or intimate partner violence, as well as adults who are ready to heal and let go of painful wounds from childhood.

You’re standing at the crossroads—your child teetering on the edge of adulthood—surrounded by a whirlwind of emotions. I know you wish to see your child thrive. Let’s talk and navigate this pivotal time together. The teen and young adult years are a complex dance of joy, confusion, and worry. The path forward, though full of potential, may seem treacherous. You wonder if they're making the right choices, if they're prepared for the world, how to best support them without hovering. The emotional rollercoaster, the shifting dynamics, and the late-night worries are overwhelming. But you don't have to go through this alone.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
