As an African American therapist, I've chosen to focus my practice on the mental well-being of minorities. Why? Because I've lived it, and I know the unique challenges we face. It's not just about therapy; it's about creating a safe haven where you can unpack the layers of your experiences, unapologetically be yourself, and embrace the strength within. So, why did I become a therapist? Well, life threw its fair share of curveballs my way, and I learned the power of seeking support. I understand the constant juggling act of trying to be there for everyone else; its a delicate dance and I'm here to be a safety net.

The person you commit to has the power to make your life better or, in some unfortunate cases, worse. That’s why Premarital counseling is so important: This isn’t meant to scare you, but it also isn’t hyperbole. I can help you and your partner sort through what you need to make sure you’re the right fit for lasting love. During our initial meeting we’ll review your marriage goals and discuss the results of 3 industry-leading assessments designed to determine your compatibility.

Sometimes you may feel stuck in life. You may be able to manage your day to day tasks, but something is holding you back from your full potential. Over time, you have developed limiting beliefs about yourself. This may impact your job performance, parental duties, and/or relationships. You have difficulty managing your thoughts and emotions. Maybe you have signs of high functioning anxiety or depression. Either way, awareness is always the first step to change! I believe life is a process, and at times people need a safe place to explore their thoughts and feelings.

Welcome! I'm glad you are here, making yourself a priority. I know it was not an easy decision to get here today but I'm proud of you for doing so. Has negative self-talk and worries led you to self-sabotage and/or prevented you from unlocking infinite potential? Are some days so overwhelming that you fantasize about giving up? Have you concluded this is a fight you have to go alone? If you are seeking a deeper level of self-awareness, personal and career growth, freedom from unhealthy relationships, and/or a desire to overcome irrational beliefs leading to imposter syndrome then you've landed in the right place.

I'm a Black therapist located in the Houston Galleria area.
Change can be scary. With change comes new beginnings, new responsibilities, and new relationships; which can be overwhelming. You tend to question, "Am I good enough," "Am I ready," and "Will I be accepted?" These negative thought loops can cause anxiousness. This way of thinking can cause you to avoid thriving forward and reaching your full potential. It can also keep you from meeting amazing people and experiencing the good things in life.

I understand wanting to talk to someone but feeling apprehensive because that's just not something that us black folks tend to do.
Yes, reading through all these profiles is a lot. Listen, you already know that something is wrong, you already know it’s a cycle, and you already know that something has to change. Your wife, your gal or ya dude has already told you that if you don’t stop, they're leaving you, your job is probably tripping, you have already pissed off your family members, and now you’re here. Struggling with communicating exactly what's going on, and how you feel (that's if you even know how you feel, things have gotten so complicated that your don't even know anymore). Let me help you break the cycle, and learn a better way to do things.

Our practice works with Black clients who struggle with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and stress management to process the origins of their concerns through a racially-sensitive lens. We also work with adult clients seeking to improve their relationships with self and others by helping them understand and process the impact of historical and generational racial trauma on their relationships with themselves, their families, their friends, and their partners.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
