If you are feeling stuck, unsure of why you are feeling what you are feeling, or don't know what to do next, counseling is a wonderful place to start. We all deserve to find and experience joy in our lives, and this looks different for everyone. Whether you are overwhelmed and burned out by work, school, or life in general, or finding it difficult to cope with life's many challenges, you do not have to go through it alone.

Do you feel like you've been trying on your own to improve or you simply do not even know where to start? Maybe you feel that it would help to talk with someone that is not part of your friends/family circles? It can feel overwhelming when your problems seem too big to figure out on your own. In counseling, you have a space to freely and openly discuss difficult topics and sort out and process all of life's difficult issues and come out feeling empowered and at peace.

Life can be hard and sometimes have some twists and turns that weren't planned. Maybe you just found out that having a child the way you envision is not going to happen. Or maybe you feel alone and sad with this new baby in your home, almost like you don't know who you are anymore. I understand that taking the first step to come to a therapy session can be nerve wracking and uncomfortable since you don't know me yet, but I hope that in time you can feel that this is a safe space for you to open up and share.

We're supposed to drink enough water, get enough sleep, exercise, save money, make money, work hard while having work/life balance, be a great spouse/parent/sibling/child, travel more...the list is endless. We are taught to engage life at a grueling and intense pace that is becoming increasingly difficult in the backdrop of a tumultuous world in crisis. I don't view mental health in a vacuum; sometimes depression and anxiety are appropriate and healthy responses to stressful and unprecedented life events. I teach solution-oriented skills to address feelings, improve communication and live in a healthy way that honors your humanity.

I specialize with LGBTQ+ adults of color from dysfunctional families.
I see you. You're here because something isn't working. You know it is time to do the work of addressing current challenges so you can move through this chapter of life in a healthier way that honors you. Working up the nerve to go to therapy can feel like a overwhelming process, but it doesn't have to be. While there may be some anxiety-provoking aspects of working with me for the first time (or any therapist for that matter), you don't have to do it alone. You can bring ALL of who you are to our work together, and you've come to the right place!

My approach is especially sensitive to the unique challenges faced by people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Congratulations on Trusting the Process & taking the leap into the journey towards your best self. Life can often be overwhelming, particularly for those grappling with anxiety, trauma, and racially based challenges. These struggles can manifest in various ways, such as persistent worry, flashbacks, a constant sense of being on edge, and feelings of isolation. It's essential to understand that the healing process is a journey, not a destination. Together, we will work through these pain points, fostering resilience and personal growth every step of the way.

I specialize in working transgender and non-binary youth and their families on matters related to gender identity.
My approach to therapy is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). A core idea in ACT is that trying too hard to get rid of or control our emotions tends to backfire. Instead of trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings (e.g., anxiety & depression), I will help you learn to react differently to them so that you can keep your focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life based on what’s important to you. We will work together to set meaningful goals to address your concerns–whether they relate to life transitions, depression, anxiety, body image, grief/loss, job or academic stress, or gender & sexuality.

LGBTQ+ Therapists

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialized training, either during their degree program or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalization in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialized training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
