In addition to a MA in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, I have training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Sexual Assault Advocacy, Trust Based Relational Intervention, Telehealth, Prepare Enrich and a Microcertification in Applied Positive Psychology.
I view therapy as a collaborative and holistic approach to the navigation of the human condition and as a safe space to explore everything life throws our way. As an existentialist and a relational therapist, my goal is to emphasize identity development, emotional insight and regulation, freedom and responsibility, effective communication, relational interdependence, and the creation of meaning. We are all walking through this world together and experiencing growth, hardship, change, love, and loss. Because we are human, I believe that every person can benefit from having a place to process emotions and an ear to listen with empathy

My journey into professional life as a marriage and family therapist began after my divorce in 1991 because I wanted to help others who experienced loss and were looking for a path to happiness.
I am skilled in working with individuals, couples and families who are facing changes in their lives. My job is to help them through life transitions that may cause difficulty. Some of those transitions are happy ones such as premarital counseling or preparation for parenthood. Some of those transitions are not so happy, such as readjustment following an affair or divorce or the death of a loved one.

I am pursuing my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.
I like to think of myself as a very empathetic, reasonable and humanistic person. My goals are to help people become more aware of their flaws and see them as building blocks of character that help us accept who we are. No one is perfect and we are all humans. God made us all different and unique. Everyone needs compassion and understanding; without them, many unhealthy relationships emerge in our society today. I process events in life very systemically and believe that a lot of aspects of our unhealthy relationships are generational and systemically thrived.

Marriage is on the rocks? Single and wanting to explore dating? It is never too late to learn about attachment styles – both yours and your partners! And though my love for couples runs deep, I'm equally as passionate to work with individuals who want to explore and strengthen important relationships – whether it be with a parent, boss, friend or God.
Have you ever thought – what distinguishes healthy relationships that are able to thrive from unhealthy ones that tend to be full of stress? Is it self-will? Determination? As a couples and family therapist, I believe the one distinguishing factor is "attachment". Attachment is the ability to connect with others. Depending on our ability (or inability) to attach interpersonally, determines the overall satisfaction we experience within our intimate relationships. Also, having been a victim of racism, I opened this practice as a place that people of color can heal from the impact of both blatant and systemic oppression.

My education specialized in marriage and family and the majority of my training was working with abusive situations.
Hello and Welcome. The first step to healing is looking for a therapist and making an appointment for help. Are you in the middle of a transition? Transitions can be changing jobs, dissolving a relationship, entering into a new relationship or just accepting change in yourself. These changes can be challenging, exhilarating and frightening all at the same time. It is difficult to remain healthy mentally and physically at these times without some help from professionals.

Marriage and family therapy has been the focus of my training in my schooling and professional career. I use this approach (systems approach) to assist my individual, couple, and family clients. During my career I have had the opportunity to work at a hospital, school, and the court system, which all helped prepare me for private practice. I look forward to helping your family reach their goals in a holistic way.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
