Many individuals with eating disorders are scared to change, too.
My practice is best suited for individuals who are seeking healthier relationships with food, their bodies, and/or exercise. If there is a question as to whether you or a loved on has an eating disorder, I can complete an assessment and then help to provide recommendations on what treatment would be a best fit for you or your loved one's needs. If you have been recommended by another professional to seek treatment and need assistance navigating those choices, I can also provide consultation for the best treatment center fit and assist with the admissions process.

I have worked with adolescents, teenagers, and college students through mood disorders, behavioral concerns, eating disorders, anxiety, body image, athletic performance, and substance use.
There is nothing more isolating than feeling like you’re alone in your experiences—constantly Googling what “normal” would feel like. Your life feels everything but normal, and in an attempt to make your life seem like everything’s fine, you don’t talk about your anxiety. You don’t talk about the crippling stress you feel at work. You don’t talk about how you haven’t eaten today. You desperately want to feel normal, and you want everyone to think everything is okay. But you are far from okay. You constantly wonder if other people feel the way you do.

The majority of my work involves helping people with complex, remote trauma and abuse exposure, surviving narcissistic abuse, eating disorders, grief, & women's sexuality.
I value the role spirituality plays in self-evaluation, change, growth, healing, relationships & success. I practice from a family systems perspective, helping people discover hindrances holding them back from living a life they love. Counseling is a powerful support resource, especially when wresting with the challenges & the unexpected that life has a way of throwing at you from past to present. I hope you'll consider letting me support you in healing & designing & creating a life you can love living. Ask me about incorporating yoga & art into counseling. Additionally, I offer an empowering Women's Sexuality service.

You are living a daily battle in your head about what you can eat, how much you should exercise, if you are worthy of taking up space. You are consumed by counting calories and by the negative voice inside that tells you, you’ll never be good enough or thin enough, smart enough or pretty enough. You are fed up with how the society/culture tells you how you should look and feel and behave. Your behaviors have you feeling exhausted and depleted and you wonder how you can go on another day. Others may think you have it all together on the outside, but the mental torture inside is killing you and feel like your life is shrinking.

Often families, friends & colleagues will find themselves questioning options & even feeling they have tried everything to help someone struggling with alcoholism/addiction & mental health issues. The long standing belief that a person must reach rock-bottom before they will accept help is a distracting & dangerous lie. There is a way to intervene & create a safer rock bottom & help create a healthier life for ourselves as well as our loved one struggling with the addiction. The clinical intervention process has proven overwhelmingly successful in bringing about life-changing experiences for everyone involved in the intervention.

Whitney Newsome is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas who has been practicing since 2017. Whitney has 11 years of various experience from prison systems, community outreach programs, complex disorders, and a desire to end the mental health stigma. Life can be odd and often we find ourselves in places that we thought we would never be. Whitney has been in her own personal therapy since she was 16 years old, same therapist along the way. She is unsure where she would be had she not taken the chance to become vulnerable. Meeting the client where they are at is the most important aspect of sustaining a therapeutic relationship.

I am here for you in your next step, whether it's speaking your truth, self-awareness and growth, navigating a difficult relationship, or support through a hard time. My ideal client is couples or individuals ready to gain emotional intelligence and become healthier. We all carry light and dark. We make choices and wake up every morning living with our choices, but not everybody knows who to talk to or how to open up. Everyone needs a person to confide in, a springboard for growth, or help through the hardest seasons of life.

Every human being has a different set of beliefs, thoughts, and behaviors that are both instilled in them after birth and what is learned personally through experiences or interactions with others. It's fairly easy to "just go through the motions in life" or do as one is told without ever really considering why do I believe what I believe? Or do I want to continue believing what I was told? Lives can be enriched or devastated by traditions, culture, and beliefs, but it's essential to understand one's place in them. Individuals can become lost within the expectations or roles that are placed on them by others.

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
