I am a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst experienced in working with older adolescents and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems and struggles with family dynamics, mood disorders, substance abuse, college and life transition anxieties - and those helping family members with these problems. My style is warm, engaged and collaborative. While I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, my orientation is primarily psychodynamic, which means I start with the assumption that the sources of distress can be complex and often outside our immediate awareness.

We identify barriers preventing you from feeling connected to your body/mind/spirit, family, friends, work, school, etc.
Do you yearn for closer, more connected relationships? Are you a parent managing overwhelm? Does your partner’s reactivity bring out the worst in you? An accepting, compassionate, and calm presence is one of the biggest gifts we can give ourselves and our loved ones. Yet, today’s stressors make that increasingly hard to do! Imagine what it would feel like to be living your best life. To move through hardships instead of away from them. To grow rather than shrink. Imagine feeling a deep love and connection for yourself and for others. How might your life unfold differently?

Are you grappling with the impacts of a loss, medical diagnosis, or trauma? Loss is common to the human experience, but when it stems from the death of a loved one or a cancer diagnosis, it can be especially isolating and overwhelming. You’re asking big questions: Will I always feel like this? Is this normal? When will my suffering end? And despite trying therapy in the past or talking to your friends and family, it’s felt like no one has truly understood your experience. You’re craving warmth, safety, and radical unconditional regard—somewhere all of your emotions, questions, and fears can be freely shared and expressed.

Most of my work is with individuals who are experiencing issues related to depression, anxiety, PTSD, self-esteem, family conflict, trauma and sexual abuse.
There are difficult things that are hard to talk about and you may carry them quietly for years and years. They weigh on you, causing emotional, physical and relational problems. If you've reached a point where you feel that you can no longer do it alone, I would like to help. As a counselor, I will listen, and will work together in helping you with what has or is happening. Our goal will be to accept yourself unconditionally and determine the best next steps to overcome what you are facing.

I have enjoyed working in private practice for 30 years with adolescents and adults. Their issues generally include such things as depression, trauma, anxiety, and relationship conflict or disconnection from loved ones. Sometimes people have been struggling with these things for a very long time. Experience has shown me that using an Internal Family Systems/Attachment-based psychodynamic approach works best for most people, and can lead to deep and lasting transformation in people's lives. At other times I work with people on a more short-term basis, using a more eclectic, skill building approach to our work together.

I have helped couples and individuals heal outdated beliefs and attitudes about themselves and relationships by looking at their family of origin.
I have helped couples for 30 years to transform their relationship using Imago Relationship Therapy. I teach couples a communication skill set that foster emotional maturity and respect. This changes relationships. Being in relationship can be challenging during the second stage of relationship when the newness recedes and irritations begins. The Imago model increases consciousness and healing around the origins of conflict. This awareness empowers couples in their ability to change so they are no longer victims to dysfunctional patterns. I incorporate a psycho-spiritual approach in my Imago work as well as individual counseling.

You’re fucking exhausted. You're lonely and believe that you don't belong. This isn't where you thought you would be at this age. You think you should've already figured out your relationships, your career, your family, etc. Isn’t there more to life? All you want to do is crawl into bed and pull the covers over your head. The mean voice inside keeps telling you that you aren’t good enough, that you don’t deserve to rest. “Take care of everyone else before taking care of yourself." “You have to be strong…All The Damn Time.“ You can’t say no because then they won’t like you."

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
