I want our sessions to feel safe, supportive, and non-judgmental so that you can get the most out of therapy. We will work together to find the root of your problems and figure out how to start feeling better.

In your relationship, are you feeling stuck, unloved, unable to talk to each other without a disagreement or fight, or is something from the past affecting you or your partner? There’s so much that impacts a relationship and it’s my role to see through your and your partner’s lens to understand your perspective, history, beliefs, stories, communication, and values. With this, we can work together to bridge understanding in how you think, feel, and act towards each other and break any negative cycles you experience. Relationships can be hard, but they don’t have to be. Let’s work together to find your personal brand of connection.

Are the numerous aspects of life causing you to feel overwhelmed? Do you find yourself wondering when you wake up in the mornings how you will make it through the day? Or maybe alcohol or drugs have taken ahold of your life and you’re ready to take your power back. If you found yourself saying “mmm yeah, kinda sounds like me” to any of those scenarios, then it might be time to talk to someone. Please be assured, going to counseling does not mean that that there is something wrong with you or that you are weak! It is impossible to be prepared for everything that life can throw at you, but you don’t have to do it alone!

In my 35+ years of counseling I have been fortunate to work with a wide variety of people with a wide variety of issues in a wide variety of settings. My broad goal in counseling is to foster positive change in others. I believe my success in working with people has been my ability to be adaptable and open when relating to the person, group, or family I am trying to assist. I listen to identify the present issues and the possible history of these issues. I employ an eclectic approach in therapy using the tools to promote change.

I’ve known from a young age that I wanted to be a counselor and was excited to learn that I could earn a living doing something that comes so naturally. I’ve always enjoyed observing human behavior, offering a new perspective, and taking part in someone’s journey towards growth. I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology, and master’s degree in counseling from the University of North Texas. I co-founded Luv On the Move with my husband, Stephen (LPC-A) to provide mental health services in our community. Together, we work with couples to help them improve communication, learn conflict resolution, and repair intimacy.

Do you want to be involved in your child's treatment? Parents are often told to just put thier child in individual therapy, as if it is an independent procedure that can cure them or make them ideal. But then how do you handle things at home outside these occassional sessions? Parents should be equipped to deal with the behavioral issues, discipline, and mental health concerns of thier children. YOU as parents should be the most important part of treatment. As a family therapist, I work with parents, children, teens, and any adults seeking changes in thier emotional, behavioral, and relational patterns.

Mental illness lives. Anxiety lives. OCD lives. Addiction lives. Depression lives. Imagine millions of people around the universe waking up with the same dark, aching places you promised you’d never talk about. I’ve noticed how quick we are, as human beings, to push aside the most meaningful parts of our lives. Let’s not push aside the things that need to be talked about. Let’s bring mental illness to the light. The worst thing we can do is ignore it. It exists and it easily consumes. So if you’re struggling right now my role is to listen, discern your strengths and vulnerabilities, and invite growth as you place trust in my care.

I believe that every person can reach to their fullest potential in life with the right support and guidance. There are times that you may feel anxious, depressed hopeless and alone. In these times it can be very helpful to have someone to help you navigate your way through these challenges to a state of mental wellness and stability. Counseling can provide a safe and confidential space to learn skills and address feelings that likely impact many areas of your life.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
