Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, experiences some sort of hardship, trauma, conflict, or setback at one time or another in their life. Sometimes we seem to handle these distressing situations and events with ease, and sometimes we seem a little lost, misunderstood, or like we can't quite keep our head above water. I can help! I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with nearly a decade of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, with a variety of presenting concerns, such as depression and anxiety, trauma, marriage/family problems, addiction, eating disorders, and many more.

Sometimes our experiences cause us to question ourselves. We often feel stuck, hopeless and alone. It is possible to move from hopeless to hopeful, from stuck to motivated, and from lonely to connected. The potential to make significant changes in our lives is inside each and every one of us. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction or relationship conflicts, choosing counseling is a demonstration of your personal power. My experience and interest is in working with adults, couples, children and adolescents in areas such as addiction, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues and relationship conflict.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I believe the counseling process is much like a journey and is a collaborative effort between the therapist and the individual, couple, or family. My counseling style is dependent on the needs of each unique individual and their goals. Therefore the counseling process will be different for each person, but my role as a therapist, to guide and encourage, remains the same. In the first few sessions, we will work to discover where you would like to go on the journey and continue when you are proactively committed to getting there.

I regularly work with adults and teens struggling with anxiety, grief, depression, intrusive thoughts, the effects of trauma, and problematic substance use and process addictions.
If you feel stuck, unbalanced, or overwhelmed, and even talking with a good friend isn't helping, counseling can help! Working with someone that is not connected to the rest of your life and focused only on you can be liberating. I strive to create an encouraging environment where you feel comfortable to talk openly and honestly, allowing us to uncover the roots of your struggles and explore what will best help you resolve your problems and get back to a more centered, balanced, and engaging life.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
