I work with couples where one or both individuals suffer from anxiety and are ready to move from stuck and afraid to freedom and peace. This can be from a trauma that keeps them from showing up authentically in their world. It can be from the pressure of being a church, community or business leader who feel they must save face or suffer in silence. It could also be those constantly struggling through systemic and multigenerational trauma, depression or PTSD. I even help couples in their intimate relationship that they want to strengthen, transform, and save.

Symptoms are signals received from both the conscious mind from various sources throughout the body, an indication that something is wrong. By avoiding theses indicators, clients with extending and spiraling issues are able to address symptoms that would otherwise end in a complex and convoluted crises. Obviously our weaknesses and issues, such as anger, insecurity, fear of intimacy, and/or the need to control are expressions of a wounded child within. Much of society has been wounded through abuse or dysfunctional families. Unresolved conflicts tend to carry-over into our adult functioning.

I wear a lot of hats in life- I'm a bonus mom, partner, daughter, friend, colleague, woman. I'm a human. I know what it's like to feel shame, anger, sadness, fear, and pain. I also know happiness, love, safety, gratitude, and hope. I've had a lot of experiences- some beautiful, some not. I share this because it's important to know that while I've not been in your shoes, I've walked in shoes of my own. I know that we are all just doing the best we can at the time. My goal is facilitate a safe environment where people can explore who they are and where they've been, gain insight, and learn skills to live a happier and healthier life.

Hello fellow humans, My name is Di-Di Mauras. I believe a good life is about healthy connections and being who you want to be. As an Army veteran I know that relationships can be tested. As a human, I know there can be challenges to feeling your best. I do not have any expectations of who you should be or what you need for you. I do have the expectation that change can, and will, come, with work. We will work together to get there.

As humans, we not only want to feel understood but we want to understand ourselves. Why do we do the things we do? The goal is to help people gain insight in the nature of their situation as well as help them develop skills for taking action and making needed changes to feel more in control of their life.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
