Hello! Thanks for taking the time to visit my website; finding a therapist who is a good match for you is important. For this reason, I'd like to explain a bit about my approach and how I treat a variety of presenting issues. I approach therapy from a client-directed, strengths-based perspective. This means that I view your current situation with curiosity and compassion, from a non-judgmental position. I'll listen to your story and help you remove the barriers to change that exist in your situation. Whenever possible, I use empirically validated models of therapy.

The old adage, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade," sounds simple enough, but it's almost never that easy. Life throws curve balls and when we factor in maintaining relationships, raising children, practicing self-care, and handling our past traumas, it’s not surprising that so many of us struggle. Seeing a therapist isn't a sign of weakness, but a show of humility and intention to improve your life and the lives of those you care for.

However, the truth is: We DO recover, and I do mean WE. My professional knowledge comes from a masters degree in addiction psychology, and my practical experience comes from my own journey of addiction and recovery.

I see a variety of clients who present with various issues/concerns/upsets, who are in distress and need help to see them through. It can be difficult to trust someone with personal issues, but after taking that first step, my clients generally feel comfortable with me, are forthcoming, and begin to feel hopeful again. Length of treatment varies depending on needs/issues, and I see both short-term and long-term clients/patients.

My ideal client is looking for a guide to help them effect change in their lives. Maybe they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or are at the end of the ways that they know how to deal with their current situation. I can help! I want clients that want to get real, talk about the truth behind what has them stuck, and will do the work alongside me to create a new future. Right now, you may feel like there is no hope and no possibility of something different, but together we can make a new pathway forward for you.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
