Addiction is not a standardized process – it has many forms, and each person has unique needs and individualized goals for how they want recovery to look.
To move confidently into our future, we must resolve the past while remaining grounded in the present. Everyone is capable recreating their lives and expanding upon their healing, but this process often requires deeper insight into who we are, what we’ve been through, and what beliefs we’ve accumulated because of these experiences. I’m here to help you manage the challenges that come with tackling a new life in recovery, guide awareness into what initiated the destructive cycle to begin with, and support you to reach new goals beyond just getting sober.

I work with adults dealing with anxiety, depression, life crisis, women's issues, relationship issues, parenting, addiction/recovery and the mind/body/spirit connection.
'Ring the bells that still can ring; forget your perfect offering; there is a crack in everything; it's how the light gets in.' (Leonard Cohen) When clients come in with cracks in their lives, I am committed to pointing towards the light. I love my job.
Although I am educated and experienced in classical psychotherapeutic theory and practice, I have a spiritual foundation to my work. I encourage my clients to connect to an inner, Loving Wisdom -- and I am committed to doing the same. It is through that connection that we both are healed.

Psychotherapy is an art and a science. The art is the use of oneself combining the intuitive sense; the naturalness in expressing comfort and caring; the ability to relate to all people; and the comfort in self-disclosure. The science is the skills and techniques we learn and the knowing what techniques will be helpful in moving clients beyond their walls towards a healthier life

Counseling is a trusting relationship where someone is actively seeking help from a professional who is willing to help. My goal is to explore my client's needs for therapy. From there, I will try to find out what they might expect from therapy such as developing the mental/emotional strength necessary to relate well with others, making decisions about relationship or career issues, reducing anxiety, improving self-esteem, or decreasing depressive symptoms that make their day difficult. I will be honest and understanding. It is my hope that each and everyone finds happiness, peace, and hope.

Making the decision to enter therapy can be a difficult decision, especially when trying to find a therapist who is the right fit. I don’t believe anyone should feel ambivalent about their therapist. The priority is finding someone who provides a safe space for sharing your story without judgment. Questions that might run through your mind: "Do I need therapy?" "Will talking to someone help me?" "I (we) went before and it didn’t really help. How will this time be different?" I recognize that not everyone "needs" therapy, but I think everyone can benefit from the support of an objective and compassionate person to empower growth.

I know both personally & professionally the power of addiction & the distressing effects that it has on generations of families.
Reaching out can be so hard, but it is such an important first step! We are not made to do the hard things alone. More and more research has shown that we are deeply wired for connection and support. The most fundamental human need we have is for relationships. The most overlooked relationship is the one you have with yourself. Counseling is about moving towards healing and growth as we learn to trust ourselves. Your unconscious mind determines how you relate to yourself & to others. Science has shown us how adaptive our bodies and brains are as they change to manage the stress or trauma of our lived experiences.

My extensive experience in the mental health field coupled with specialized training in addiction and trauma have enabled me to be more successful treating clients in an empathetic and non-judgmental way.
My work focuses on helping people struggling with addiction and/or symptoms resulting from childhood relational trauma Over 25 years of experience, I have seen that childhood experiences of neglect or emotional, physical and sexual abuse can cause serious psychological problems. 'Less than nurturing' parenting can cause adulthood anxiety, depression and addiction. Many of my clients have struggled with addictive behaviors using substances (alcohol, drugs) or processes (sex, love, work) to deal with emotional pain. There is a high correlation between painful childhood experiences and addictive behaviors.

Addiction Therapists
What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
