I AM A WARRIOR! I AM A FIGHTER! I AM A CONQUEROR! I AM A SURVIVOR of RAPE, NARCISSISTIC ABUSE and CANCER! My purpose in life is to help, assist, and advocate for survivors of child sexual abuse, rape, dating/domestic violence, and narcissistic abuse. I am determined to change the narrative of survivors. There are so many survivors that will not ask for help because it is a sign of weakness. We need to change that mindset. You have to make the first step, and when you do, I will be there to help you start and get through your healing and recovery journey.

Change is possible! Making the decision to seek therapy can be a difficult one and often comes from a place of frustration, anger, sadness, or just feeling "stuck". Therapy can be a way to help you feel "unstuck" and to help you find balance so that you're in a better position to reach your goals. I'm a firm believer that change can happen when we create a safe space for conversation. By building a therapeutic relationship and a safe environment, we can discuss ways to improve the relationships in your life and I can offer support to help you implement the positive changes you're hoping for. Hope can lead to change.

As a counselor, I am continually inspired by the beauty of human resilience and the transformative power of connection. Every individual carries within them the capacity for growth and healing, and my role is to help them uncover and nurture that inner strength. At the heart of my therapeutic approach lies empathy and postmodernism. Postmodernism in therapy emphasizes the collaborative nature of the therapeutic relationship, where the client's expertise is valued, and their unique experiences are honored.

If you or your child are struggling with issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship problems, anger issues, low energy, attention problems or sleeplessness, you may be experiencing the responses of a nervous system that has become overly sensitized and reactive. Most people who enter therapy with these presenting problems are eager to experience some relief from these symptoms, and to be able to have more choice about their responses to life’s stressors. They also wish to be able to live their best lives-to experience joy, contentment and fulfillment.

The life transition into becoming a parent is often not quite what we expected. Sometimes that means a struggle in the beginning, such as infertility, infant loss, traumatic birth, NICU trauma, post-partum anxiety/depression. Sometimes the struggle is when the baby comes home. Then they get even older and have different needs and you are not sure how to connect with them. It often takes a toll on your relationships, with your child or partner or extended family. You are just trying to be the best parent you can, while dealing with all that life has/is throwing at you. You are often doing this with little to no emotional support.

Grief is a universal burden that we all must carry. Just like any heavy load, things can quickly feel unbalanced, putting goals at risk, interrupting progress, or shutting you down all together. You are not alone, and this is not just "all in your head." Finding a soft place to land, where it is safe to say what you are thinking and feeling, is important for healing and growth after life's traumas have touched your life. Therapy can be that place.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
