Are you worried about your child? Struggling with meltdowns, crying, yelling, or even aggressive outbursts? As a parent it breaks your heart to see your child so overwhelmed by their feelings. You know they feel things very deeply, but the dramatic highs and lows are exhausting. You wish they could calm themselves down and cope with big feelings well. Seeing your child so upset makes you feel like a failure as a parent. You worry their behavior keeps them from making friends. You long for peace and harmony in your home. Every book or person has a different idea of how to help. You feel lost and confused on what to do next.

Grief is a universal burden that we all must carry. Just like any heavy load, things can quickly feel unbalanced, putting goals at risk, interrupting progress, or shutting you down all together. You are not alone, and this is not just "all in your head." Finding a soft place to land, where it is safe to say what you are thinking and feeling, is important for healing and growth after life's traumas have touched your life. Therapy can be that place.

Many psychological problems are tied to relationship struggles - sex and money are two of the biggest struggles implicated in these cases either as cause, consequence, or something in between. These struggles are emotionally moving manifestations of the human need for connection and the deep pain felt when this connection is damaged or severed. I help individuals and couples seek relationship-deepening events, become more fluent in the language of others, and understand that satisfying relationships are contingent on the ability to relate to the people you value in your life.

Two words: life happens! Therapy helps us live more purposeful, self-aware lives. There is nothing sweeter, to me, than healing trauma and breaking chains. Trauma seeps through many aspects of our lives, and if we're not careful, can drastically alter our response to the world around us. It is important to move toward existing in the world the way we choose to exist, not what's projected onto us. Also, life happens in the context of relationships; therefore, couples therapy sets my soul ablaze. Couples seeking to grow or overcome obstacles is incredibly intimate work. I am honored to walk alongside and help heal your covenant.

I am certified in anxiety and trauma (EMDR). I am also a relationship expert with a PhD in marriage and family therapy and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW-S, LICSW). I have over 19 years of experience providing therapy to individuals, couples, groups, and families. Many of my clients choose alternative methods for dealing with anxiety and depression instead of prescription medication. I am also a certified herbalist and a practitioner of yoga. I'm not just EMDR "trained", but also certified with advanced hours in trauma. Best times to reach me for a free phone consultation - before 11 am, between 2-3:00 and after 7 pm.

I have worked in clinical practice for 12 years, and have 20 years professional experience, with an 8-year career in public relations prior to clinical practice. I was called to the helping profession and received my master's in social work in 2011. Since then, I have been called a "fierce advocate" and "impassioned counselor" by my clients and colleagues. I have served as a therapist in medical/trauma and psychiatric hospitals, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), in community health and in schools. I currently provide psychotherapy and premarital counseling in private practice and SPED counseling services in schools.

Your relationship is worth fighting for, but it shouldn't be something that you fight over. Though finances, sex, politics, and spiritual faith can be common issues that people argue over, there are many more things that challenge relationships, and I've had the benefit and pleasure to help many people in diverse relational difficulties. You are not alone, quite literally every adult has faced difficulty within relationships. Whether there has been infidelity, loss of trust, abusive tendencies, lost connections, lack of relational congruency or cohesion, poor communication, family problems, commitment issues, or irresponsibility.

Being a parent is hard. Being a Christian parent, to a hurting child, in a secular world, is even harder. Your child, or even you, may be struggling with anxiety or other mental health or behavioral concerns. Perhaps your child is adopted and you need support from a therapist who knows what adoptive families need. You want your child to talk to you and tell you how they're feeling. You want to know what to say to comfort them and what to do when they're in a crisis. You want answers to all the questions swirling in your head and heart right now. I can help you answer them by teaching you about powerful, prayerful parenting.

Are you a young to middle aged adult that gives and caters to others yet feels lost from your own life’s purpose? Do you set meaningful goals but stay stuck in procrastination? Does high anxiety drive self-sabotaging behaviors of over eating, drinking, and screen time? You love the people in your life yet feel unseen or find yourself in a toxic relationship you keep hoping will change. Experiences in our past such as childhood neglect, shaming, bullying, a divorced or conflict in the home, loss of a loved one or other adverse events have a lasting negative impact on our lives today.

The ideal person for me to work with has a genuine desire to change and improve their life. Trauma, depression, grief, and anxiety are all thieves of joy, so there must be a willingness to confront these issues. Together, we can work together to confront pain and suffering to create positive change.

Everyone can benefit from connecting with someone who will intentionally hold space for us to explore, question, learn, heal, or grow. Mental healthcare can have different angles and facets. Sometimes we need professional support from a preventive and early intervention stand point (life transitions, increase resilience, processing experiences) and other times we may need it for treatment (diagnosis, moderate to severe symptoms, significant distress). Either way, it is best to be proactive about our overall health and wellness.

As a Counselor I believe that each person is unique therefore, each client's Mental Health Treatment should be individualized and based off of their personalities, goals, needs and current struggles they are seeking counseling for.

So you have started looking for a counselor, congratulations on completing what can often be the most difficult step! You probably have some trepidation about talking to a stranger about your life and I know when I first started seeing a counselor, I felt like I was under a microscope and I hated that feeling more than anything. Counseling is supposed to be a place where you can feel safe and I hope we can build trust and an understanding that my office is a place without judgment. Seeking counseling for any reason does not mean that you are broken or something is wrong with you, but rather that guidance is needed in the next steps.

My practice technique specializes in helping folks who struggle with overthinking and perfectionist tendencies. Are you relied upon? Your own worst critic? A caretaker? A gifted and talented student unsure of what comes next? Getting overwhelmed with work tasks or overcome with decision fatigue? Is it hard for you to view rest as productive? What if you could learn to be there for others as well as yourself?

My ideal client is someone who is open-minded and willing to reach into themself to rediscover this actualization tendency. I appreciate a client who is open to self-exploration, personal growth, and collaboration in the therapeutic process. I love working with people who may be struggling with their identities, relationships, and attachments. Dealing with such issues can feel hopeless and isolating to many people, especially those who do not receive adequate support and validation.

The life transition into becoming a parent is often not quite what we expected. Sometimes that means a struggle in the beginning, such as infertility, infant loss, traumatic birth, NICU trauma, post-partum anxiety/depression. Sometimes the struggle is when the baby comes home. Then they get even older and have different needs and you are not sure how to connect with them. It often takes a toll on your relationships, with your child or partner or extended family. You are just trying to be the best parent you can, while dealing with all that life has/is throwing at you. You are often doing this with little to no emotional support.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
