Summer is here. Your teen seems to be doing ok, but you are worried school will be here sooner than later and are concerned about what the future holds. Your teenager is anxious, depressed, or a combination of both. They don't seem to be able to maintain focus, they lack motivation, and are under-perform in school. They might have suicidal thoughts, be self-harming, or have turned to the internet, alcohol or drugs to cope. But, they won't talk to you about what is happening. I can help. I speak TikTok, have tattoos, wear Vans, and listen to alternative music. I connect very well with adolescents and they open up to me.

I work with adults and teens and provide individual counseling. I offer both online and in person session. No matter where you are in this healing process; first time seeing a therapist or seasoned client who has already done a lot of the inner work, my door is open for you. I specifically tailor each session to what your specific needs are as my client, I do not operate from a cookie cutter model. Our work will have a balance and a flow to it meaning not every session will be the same, some sessions will have break throughs and other times we may keep it light and have a few laughs.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’m just not sure what to do anymore. I’m overwhelmed, and I think I could use some help, " I believe this is one of the most powerful realizations we can have. And to act on that realization takes courage and strength. From my own experiences of grief, losses, and various changes throughout my life, I am familiar with how challenging it can be to reach out to others when in need. That is why, as a counselor, I am honored to walk with each client. I received my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2023. I'm an LPC - Associate supervised by Cortnee Wright, M.A., LPC-S.

My strongest belief as a therapist is that there must be a connection between therapist and client, one of trust and respect. Not all therapists are a right fit for you, you have to find the therapist you connect with. I have worked with individuals and their families to gain skills for coping with and managing issues surrounding depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and behavioral struggles along with relational and personal issues. I have worked with adolescents in hospital outpatient settings as well as private practice. I have experience working with children, adult individuals, couples, and families.

“Some days it is all I can do to just breathe, much less get out of bed. No one seems to understand what I am going through, and I have lost sight of myself.” If you have said these things or have these thoughts, you are not alone. Life is full of ups, downs, twists, and turns. It tends to create challenges that may seem impossible to overcome and leave you struggling. Life struggles can have an impact on the way you perceive yourself and/or the world. You don’t have to work through these challenges alone.

Hi! My name is Amanda (Mandy) Schramm. I've been working in the mental health field since 2015, but practicing counseling since 2020. My experience mainly has been working with adolescents in residential settings struggling with mental health and behavioral issues. My work with adolescents in long term programs has afforded me the opportunity to see how different environments and family systems shape youth growth and needs. I have also worked with adults struggling with mental health, ineffective coping skills, poor social supports, and substance use.

Life. Is. HARD. I personally feel like that isn’t talked about enough. I think we try to convince ourselves that we should not be struggling, or we feel guilty for struggling. Give yourself permission to vent and get some guidance. You need someone who will listen and not minimize your situation or your feelings. Asking for help does not mean that you are not capable of handling things on your own but sometimes it’s just easier to have someone listen and offer support. If you are struggling with figuring out this thing called life or you just had a change develop, I want to help you navigate those!

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
