We affirm you for these first steps! Life can be tough at times, and it can lead us down paths that leave us feeling hopeless. Many think that what you’re going through is your fault, some think you can change it on your own, many of you have tried many times to find answers. Addiction, Trauma, and Family Conflict weighs us down in life and leaves us thinking there is no hope. How do we know? We have been there. One thing we believe is people can heal! What if you could redefine, refocus, revive, even recreate the life you deserve? At Redefine Life, this is exactly what we do. We help you become the best version of you!

The modalities I most often draw from include psychodynamic psychotherapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and person-centered therapy.
I believe that therapy is a tool of self-examination that helps individuals navigate difficult life experiences and know themselves more deeply. It often takes painful experiences or emotions for someone to seek therapy, and I enjoy helping people find new pathways through which to experience a more fulfilling life. I most often work with people navigating depression, anxiety, perinatal and postpartum depression and/or anxiety, or general life stressors (such as relationship issues or a new job).

While capable of treating a wide variety of mental health problems, I currently specialize in Trauma/PTSD, Depression, and Interpersonal problems through the utilization of Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
Trauma comes in numerous forms, many of which remain just below the surface, unconsciously directing our lives, impacting our relationships, and stunting our unique pursuit of happiness. Thankfully, mental health services are no longer strictly designated for those amongst us experiencing the most overt forms of dysfunction. From those in need of initial trauma recovery and basic life stabilization to those looking to maximize their potential and optimize their lifestyle, my ideal client simply seeks to shed the bindings of the past in pursuit of a more authentic and fulfilling life.

I pull from multiple modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I truly enjoy working with adolescents and adults dealing with anxiety, depression, and life transitions. I am a firm believer that by identifying negative thoughts patterns, their origins, and what role they plan in one’s life, one can gain more control and understanding of their emotions and begin to make positive changes.

What is therapy? Across all stages of life, we are faced with struggles and challenges that can hold us back, creating frustration, isolation, anxiety, sadness. Therapy is about “neutralizing the negative,” self learning, and finding ways to re-connect with your inner strength. From dealing with difficulties with focus at school through recovering from traumatic memories - and everything in between - therapy is self learning and self acceptance. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavior theories as both together provide balance between emotional regulation and challenging negative thinking.

DBT has been shown to be effective with borderline personality disorder and patients struggling with mood dysregulation, self harm, and suicidal concerns.
Originally from Virginia and after moving to Texas, I taught school for 14 years in Houston ISD and at Presbyterian School in the museum district. With increasing desire to help students with emotional and social issues, I returned to the University of Houston--Clear Lake and earned my master's degree in Clinical Psychology. I completed my intensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy at Menninger with Shari Manning, PhD and Karyn Hall, PhD. Starting in January of 2013, I worked as a practicum student and LPC-Intern at The DBT Center of Houston.

The primary psychotherapies I use are Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).
Attempts to “control” and “get rid” of our thoughts and feelings can leave us feeling powerless and stuck struggling with our problems in life. Instead of continuing that endless battle against anxiety, sadness, and all the other hurdles life throws at us, let’s help you identify how your mind can trap you, keeping you stuck against your problems. The most common struggles I help clients learn to change their relationships with are anxiety and intrusive thoughts, career stressors, and eating concerns.

Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.
Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.
What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.
How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
