I integrate post-modern, person-centered, feminist, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral therapies into my approach.
How are you today? Really, how are you? Browsing these pages can be overwhelming – the unfamiliar words, the multitude of smiling faces. Those smiles can seem insulting in the face of overwhelming depression. Who do you pick? It’s okay to have questions and doubts; it’s okay to pick someone and change your mind once you meet them. My name is Cherise (she/her) and I am an LPC-Associate. This means that I have the education and experience to have a provisional license to counsel, but must do so under supervision. You not only have a qualified therapist, you also have a second, more experienced therapist behind the scenes.

My ideal client doesn’t have a defined age and gender is merely a construct. I welcome couples and individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community as well as allies as well as the complex issues that come with these identities. My favorite things to help people with are the deep thoughts, anxieties, and changes associated with BIG life transitions, balancing work and life, and managing ADHD. I love talking about things that range from the mundane and temporary to deep spiritual and philosophical questions.

While reaching out for help can feel scary, please know that in therapy you have a lot of control, and I work hard to help you feel safe. My clients often prefer the flexibility that video visits offer. Typically my clients are living stressful lives, may have a history of trauma, or feel overwhelmed. In particular, I'm experienced in working with people living with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, people in recovery, caregivers and healthcare workers. Everyone is different, and I prefer to shape how we work together based on your individual needs and goals. I see clients virtually in Texas, New Hampshire and Maryland.

Does it feel like no one is listening to you? Need to get something off your shoulders with trust that there will be no judgement? Feel like you are stagnant in life or cannot overcome a hardship? It takes tremendous courage to decide to escape your (un)comfort zone and find out how you can create a better quality of life. I use evidence-based, therapeutic techniques that guide you toward discovering your hidden strengths, conquering your demons, and enhancing your self-confidence. Our first goal will be for you to walk out of each session feeling self-empowered.

I consider it an honor and privilege to be included in someone's journey in understanding themselves and the world around them, and collaborate with clients as they work towards goals meaningful to them in therapy. Working with young adults and LGBTQIA+ individuals through their obstacles and successes is a particular passion of mine.

Life can oftentimes feel overwhelming and if you have wished for an instruction manual or 'how-to' guide, you are not the first, nor will you be the last. My approach works to help you better understand how best to navigate the world around you, especially if the world was not built with you in mind. Together, we can develop the support, structure, and safety that you deserve while going through life. My practice is neurodivergence-affirming and queer-positive. I strive to foster an environment where you can belong, instead of one where you have to fit in.

Life can be messy–and by messy, I mean painful and joyous and everything in between. Counseling can provide a space where you feel seen, supported, and validated through it all. My approach is grounded in relational-cultural theory and trauma-informed counseling. I have worked with survivors of various losses and traumatic events. These experiences can result in feelings of shame and isolation. For this reason, my practice centers on healing through connection. I emphasize your safety and empowerment throughout the counseling process. I meet you where you are with warmth, non-judgment, and even a little bit of humor.

How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
