My work with couples focuses on restoring trust and appreciation for one another.
There are times in life when we all could use some help. You may be experiencing anxiety or grief after a change in life circumstances, or you may find that negative patterns in relationships with others are getting in the way of the life you want to lead. I approach clients from a highly individualized, strengths-based perspective. My counseling philosophy is grounded in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which helps clients identify and commit to their values; and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which helps clients reframe patterns of negative thinking.

I work with couples in crisis and provide therapy for those who are thinking about ending a relationship, but are confused and don't know what they want.
Resilience. Connection. Perspective. I believe in focusing on one's strengths and capabilities and assisting a person by building on those factors. With so many demands placed on our lives, relationships may sometimes suffer. While we make plans and schedule ourselves to accommodate life, at times we make assumptions based on past experience. Are you living the life you want to be living? Do you know who you are and what brings you joy? Are your relationships all you want them to be? If the answer is yes, congratulations. If it's no, then maybe I can help. Summer availability

I may be a good support if you are an adult or have a teen seeking individual or couples counseling for your struggles with life transitions, history of trauma, mood concerns, relationship struggles, managing ADHD or body-focused repetitive behaviors (hair-pulling/skin-picking) or had difficult childhood experiences that might still affect you today.
Are you feeling on edge or stressed out by life? Do you feel numb or unable to enjoy life anymore? Are you struggling in your relationships? Do you just want a safe person to talk to without judgment? Feeling stressed, down or unstable can be so difficult disconnecting us from those closest to us & even ourselves. If you are struggling, Calm & Cozy Counseling with me may help you get a good grip on life, manage stress and just feel better. I hope to support your needs by working from a unique approach based on your personality and responsiveness.

I have also spent over 20 years dealing sexual and non-sexual personal or relationship issues.
*****At this time I made the hard decision to cease taking insurance. I have many reasons for this but feel that it is the best choice for me at this time. My new fees will be in line with people who have medium to higher copays and no one has to meet a deductible. This simplifies the therapy process for all of us and I still seek quick solutions without sacrificing quality. My style is informal and your comfort is important to me as we deal with difficult, often painful subjects. This less formal billing process fits well with my style.

We know that one of the biggest predictors of success in therapy is the quality of the therapeutic relationship.
Immediate Openings! I’m glad you’re considering seeking help for whatever you’re going through in life right now. I work with clients from diverse backgrounds, working through all sorts of things ranging from depression and anxiety to trauma and grief. I am a Christian, a husband, a father, a classically trained psychotherapist, and a combat veteran, and I believe all these parts of my identity work together to produce who I am as a counselor. All clients seeking help are important to me, but I get a special sense of fulfillment in working with military veterans and first responders.

I believe that there is hope for change in everyone and that effective therapy begins with a relationship of genuineness and mutual respect.
I entered the field of counseling because of a desire to help those in crisis or who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. I realized I wanted to be a counselor while working at a local community college. I saw students who were struggling academically but were very bright. I came to understand that there are many factors that go into being successful at life. I have always had a helping nature but didn’t fully understand why people behaved they way they did. Through my education and experience I can now help people in their personal lives, relationships and careers.

The focus of my doctoral program was largely devoted to improving Relational Competencies for individuals, couples, and families.
Everyone experiences normal ups and downs throughout their lives. Sometimes, however, these episodes become more than we can handle alone. It is often not easy to ask for help but it can be the first step toward healthier functioning, improved relationships, and personal growth. Over the past 20 years I have helped many people navigate through life's challenges to lead more productive and fulfilling lives. Together, in a safe and supportive environment, we can uncover destructive patterns, identify strengths, and develop healthier ways of coping.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
