Hi, I'm Swapomthi. I know beginning therapy can be overwhelming. It can also be one of the best decisions you make to put yourself and your mental health first. Yes I'm a therapist, but I'm also a woman of color, a mother, a first-generation American, and a person who has experienced loss. All these roles have shaped how I see the world and how I approach counseling. I work hard to create a nurturing and supportive space to help you feel at ease as we start this process of therapy. I believe that you are your own best expert and we can walk this path towards wellness together.

We all have an innate goodness, natural spontaneity and potential. We tend to disconnect from it in response to painful experiences. It is a natural, even genetic program, to want happiness and joy in life. The frantic attempt to numb or avoid pain, results in denial of joy and natural spontaneity. My commitment as a therapist is facilitation of healing and transformation towards joy and connection. I use a Holistic approach, seek authenticity, and believe that each person's uniqueness can bring inner peace, extend to family, and enhance relationships. The happiness we generate extends to others and then returns.

We as humans aren't meant to go through difficult times alone. When your resources seem low, a therapist offers consistent, reliable opportunities to work toward your healing. I might be a good fit for you if you are looking for empowerment through creative expression. As an art therapist, I believe art and imagination can address our bodies' biological survival responses in ways rational thinking and talk therapy can't.

"Courage doesn't happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life" ---Shannon L. Alder. It takes bravery to open up your heart, mind, and soul to someone in an effort to discover, confront, change or embrace what is inside. I hope to be the person that can join you on your journey of self-discovery and advancement. As a therapist, I help my clients realize their strengths and utilize them to reach their personal goals. I chose social work to be part of a helping profession and have had the privilege of practicing in New York where I received my MSW from Fordham University, California, and now Texas. My experience focuses on individuals and their families during life’s most challenging journeys: sudden trauma, medical complications, hospitalizations, organ transplants, hospice, and incarceration. While specializing in these challenges, I am equally happy with counseling individuals and couples through life’s daily hurdles. I use evidence-based, therapeutic techniques guided by attachment theory, trauma-informed care and a healthy dose of humor.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
