Supervised by Dr. Bernis Riley, PsyD, LPC S. Are you experiencing the symptoms of anxiety or depression? Are you struggling with a past trauma? No one wants to experience pain and suffering, yet we can learn and grow from those experiences. In our broken world, you may be like so many people who feel broken and hopeless, who struggle to find their purpose in life. The good news is that there is hope and there is a Savior who died for you and loves you. Whatever issues you are struggling with, God's word assures us, and my own experiences have confirmed, that we can learn and grow and reach the full potential God has for us.

I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, and 65+ from diverse backgrounds and different walks of life. I help people with their personal goals, life transitions, grief, crisis, and complex trauma. Many of my clients need to feel safe, seen, and heard while processing what they lived or are living through. My clients want to balance their physical, emotional, personal, relational, academic, or vocational functioning. Exploring deep or complex experiences is a part of our work. Identifying your unique strengths, resources, and values is even more important. Together, we find hope to learn and practice healthy skills and habits.

Choosing psychotherapy is a positive life changing decision for yourself and your family. My practice focuses on the treatment of children, adolescents, adults, and families in a warm caring private office setting. A large part of my practice is children and adolescents. I love working with them and have many years of training in play therapy. Some of the most frequent problems addressed are behavioral, ADHD, abuse, grief and loss and divorce issues. I also see a lot of women in my practice and address women's issues. Many women have difficulty coping with relationship problems, depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, grief and loss and divorce.

Sometimes, thoughts and emotions overwhelm us to the point we feel paralyzed or powerless to effect change for ourselves. Maybe you have experienced a loss or trauma & find you are struggling to heal & move forward. Perhaps, it is your teenager or your marriage that is hurting and you just aren't sure how to help. You might just be looking for clarity or direction on your journey through life. Whatever you are facing, let's work together to make those challenges become purposeful experiences.

The therapist's response is to come alongside the client to provide professional and competent care.Counseling is most helpful when there is a relationship between client and therapist that is honest, empathic, and committed; and provides awareness and personal growth. I believe the therapist and the therapeutic relationship serves as a mirror to the client whereby the client can view his/her reflection in a setting of acceptance, affirmation, change, and hopefully - healing. The client's journey to wholeness and healing is personal and self-directed and the therapist joins only by invitation of the client.

You are emotionally and physically drained from not liking yourself and your body. Other people tell you that you’re okay, but in your heart, you don’t fully believe them. It boggles your mind that other people can go about their lives unaffected by their imperfections. You want that too, but you’re not sure it’s possible. In your best moments, you believe you deserve it.

I am committed to helping people. I have a passion for supervision. I believe that supervision helped me to become a confident clinician and I feel empowered to help others find their clinical voice as well. I also have a passion for people dealing with chronic illness. People who deal with health issues on a daily basis need someone to talk to as they navigate the struggles of getting well. As a parent of four children I understand that parenting can be difficult and at times frustrating. I want to help parents find the joys in raising children and help them feel successful as caregivers. I am kind, compassionate, and honest.

I work with adults who are experiencing chronic illness, chronic fatigue, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and dissociative disorders.
If you could draw a picture of your emotions, it would look like a squiggly mess. Maybe there's trauma from the past that's interfering with things in the present. You're exhausted and tired of being tired. All of this stress is making your body ache and it's having an effect on relationships at home, at work, and within yourself. You need someone who will listen to you and make you feel understood. Trust isn't something you give out easily, but you're willing to give it a try if you find the right therapist.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
