My specialty is using play and art therapy to engage with kids and teens, ages 3-19, and their families who are coping with big feelings.
Is your family experiencing big emotions? Are you frustrated in your efforts to help your child cope with their feelings? Is your child unhappy, frightened or upset by a sibling’s behavior or a parent’s response to that behavior? Do you and your partner disagree about how to handle big emotions? Is your family having difficulty working through feelings related to loss, separation or divorce? I will work collaboratively with your family while tailoring a mix of therapy styles to best serve everyone in reaching their emotional goals. These strength-based therapy styles include: play, creative arts, mindfulness and talk therapies.

I've worked with clients from many stages of life using art, EMDR, body awareness, vizualization and relaxation methods to help ease stress and integrate repressed material.
As a psychotherapist I strive to assist my clients in the process of becoming more whole in all aspects of their lives. My primary training is as an art therapist and I use an integrative approach to promote healing. I find that enhancing talk therapy with experiential methods gives my clients the freedom to express their deepest selves. Within the therapeutic relationship we can find the existing internal nuances and textures that make us all unique and valuable. My work includes seeing individual adults who have depression/anxiety, past trauma, addiction related issues and relationship challenges.

Often, relationship issues arise when effective communication is limited or communication styles are mismatched. Having the tools/skills to successfully express what you want/need and how you feel offers the freedom to pursue life's positive opportunities. I can help you address communication obstacles, and with you, explore the possible sources of conflict causing them. As an art therapist, I offer a client-centered approach in multiple modalities: art, play, expressive, and traditional talk therapy. In my experience, the flexibility to create a customized, comfortable, challenging therapeutic environment allows for successful counseling outcomes with individuals, couples, families, and teens.

In a safe, nonjudgmental space, we will work through the barriers that are holding you back and st art to focus on new skills and strategies for coping.
For those experiencing a difficult season or life transition, talking with someone about the challenges you face is one of the healthiest decisions you can make for yourself and your loved ones. At times, life is messy! Talking it through and getting an outside perspective other than friends and family can help. In addition to counseling individuals, I have over 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. I provide guidance to those that struggle in many areas of school; emotional regulation, self-esteem, peer relationships, ADHD, behavioral issues, and anxiety to name a few.

Despite your best efforts, life is unknowable - you can't always predict or be prepared for what comes your way. You might need help sorting out what's going on. As a therapist, I have learned that we are not alone in our struggles. People hurt together, and we also must heal together. Through our relationships and experiences, we can grow and rediscover what we thought was once lost. I want to help you down that path of discovery while using psychotherapeutic approaches such as attachment theory, AEDP, IFS, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), Somatic Experiencing, and EMDR.

Based on my 25 years of experience, I usually recommend a holistic and objective assessment of the problems as p art of the solution. These assessments include understanding, first and foremost, the needs of the individual. These can include anxiety, depression, ADHD, peer issues, family problems, stress, and many other things. I treasure the insight the individuals bring to the conversation with their questions, concerns, observations, and overall experiences. I bring these understandings to my therapy sessions and welcome those involved with the individual to lead the individual towards a more passionate, kind, fulfilling life.

We all have our own stories. Some are of resilience and how we overcome. Some are of tragedy and how we can’t move on. At the end of the day, I think all each of us wants is to be loved and accepted for who we are. No matter your story, I admire your courage for seeking the support you need.

Maybe experiencing low self-esteem, unresolved guilt, stress, life transitions, conflicts in relationships, unfulfilled goals, etc. My goal is to create a non-judgmental, safe space for you where you feel heard, validated, and most importantly supported. I hope that after our first session together you will walk away with better clarity of your situation, more confidence in yourself, and a feeling of relief.

You were taught to tear yourself down, aim low, and use all your energy to take care of others while leaving nothing for yourself. Do you know that Spirit has a plan for you that’s bigger than this? No wonder your mind's driving you crazy! Our image-obsessed society is deeply afraid of the wild creative potential of our emotions. The real problem is NOT that you’re weak! It’s that you don’t trust yourself to be powerful. Imagine how amazing your life could be if you learned to channel all that crazy-making energy into finding yourself, feeling good, and fulfilling your deepest calling.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
