My approach to therapy is based on each individual’s inner strength and resources, and resiliency to every day stress and adversities that life tends to present. I focus on practical applications drawn from various theories as a means to provide each individual the most meaningful treatment for healing and change. One of the most empowering and healing methods I use in my psychotherapy is creating a caring, collaborative relationship built on mutual trust and respect, providing a safe environment free from judgment, and support through active listening and empathy.

We learn by doing, not by talking about doing! My practice is centered around Experiential Therapy which means that I believe in the power of personal experiences to facilitate change. I'm a firm believer that nature and adventure is a catalysts for healing and I integrate adventure-based therapy sessions with individuals and groups. Through immersive, hands-on activities and techniques, I guide clients in uncovering underlying issues, fostering self-awareness, developing healthier coping mechanisms, breaking free from their comfort zones, building resilience, and discovering new perspectives on life.

If you are struggling with your emotions, mental health, or challenging life circumstances, you do not have to face it alone. Feeling defeated, overwhelmed, on-edge, and self-critical can feel so isolating. I know from personal experience how dark life feels when battling anxiety and depression. Your brain may be telling you that your situation is helpless or that you are being “too dramatic,” but you are not broken. Your struggles do not define you, and it is not weak to ask for help. It actually takes a lot of courage and strength to start the process of healing, and if you have made it this far, you are doing amazing.

The story of your life will lead you through many ups and downs. Sometimes, you get stuck in a low spot and cannot find a way out. At other times, a chapter ends, and you struggle to turn the page and begin the next adventure. Maybe a dark moment lives in your past but refuses to stay there. Perhaps you are a parent watching your child struggle with their own story, wishing you could just swoop in and save the day. As a former High School English teacher, I have always known the power of stories. As a counselor, my goal is to empower my clients to take control of their story and write a more hopeful future.

I meet with individuals using a variety of approaches. Work with clients is determined by the problem brought to the session, beginning where you find yourself-cognitively, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I generally work with a client's life story, to look for origins of beliefs and problems, and to find ways to reframe the story so that it is not so limiting. I am experienced in the areas of trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, stress, anger management, conflict resolution, addiction, career counseling and various other issues.

My orientation toward therapy is grounded in a humanistic perspective that holds individuals are inherently motivated toward well-being and self-actualization. Given a safe and supportive environment, I believe, most individuals embrace opportunities and insight to work toward changing negative patterns in their lives and to find hope and healing. From an advocacy orientation, we will utilize empowerment strategies and identify external barriers that inhibit individual development and self-advocacy skills and work through traumatic experiences and impacts from life experiences to return you to healthy functioning.

During times of transition it is hard to keep moving or even hold your ground. There are times you might feel alone or lost. Worries may come and keep you up at night or lead you to places you never thought you could go. If you are facing these moments of uncertainty and hopelessness, know that there is hope. Throughout counseling I cannot promise less heartache, pain, and loss. I can promise to sit with you throughout your journey and together find ways to provide hope for the future.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
