The answer is YES! You have what it takes to make small positive changes that will move you toward your personal goals. Self-improvement is a lifelong adventure and I would honored to take part in this leg of your voyage. Using different modalities in conjunction with traditional talk therapy, such as nature, gardening, art, yoga, and play, I provide an engaging road to healing and growth specific to you. With 24 years of experience in education, I have honed the skill of identifying underlying issues to facilitate targeted intervention in areas of your life that are not aligned with your core values.

My approach to counseling is collaborative and client-centered. I also work from a trauma-informed approach with the basic principle that everyone works through and processes trauma in different ways. My hope is to individualize treatment according to what works for YOU. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients feel comfortable opening up and embracing their true selves. During our time together, we will work through past and current traumas, stressors, and come up with healthy coping skills as well as identify your personal strengths.

Disturbing symptoms such as anxiety, depression, disorientation, and explosive anger may be signs that important, but unseen, parts of ourselves need attention. I use a depth psychological approach to help clients develop greater awareness of who they are and what they need, so that they can use their symptoms as pathways to a more meaningful relationship with themselves and the world around them.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, my goals are to create a safe and supportive environment in which all individuals can thrive, contributing to a healthier and happier family life. I love working with children and adolescents, and use play therapy, art, and music to help them express feelings and concerns when words don’t come so easily. I also value working with couples and individuals to explore the impact their family of origin or current relationships are having on their emotions and coping. Finding healthy ways to cope with the stresses of today's world can be challenging, and I'd welcome supporting you in your journey.

If you are experiencing difficulties in your life and ready to start exploring how to create a different path, therapy is a great place to start. I have experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. Trauma, big and small, can play a large role in how we view our world and how we react and interact in our daily lives. There are a lot of tools that can be helpful in creating a life that feels different and more manageable. EMDR therapy is one of the tools I use most often in my work and have found it helpful in addressing a variety of primary concerns.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
