I'm a nationally recognized expert in the emotions of reproductive function: PMS, pregnancy, postpartum depression, infant loss, menopause.
I believe we're shaped by biological (heredity, diet, hormones), psychosocial (peers, family, job stress), and psychological influences (thoughts, self-esteem, perfectionism). Addressing the mind-body interaction is critical. I guide and teach, helping clients learn new skills such as meditation and meridian tapping to handle life stresses. Clients who best fit my style wish to let go of negative patterns of self-doubt, guilt, worry, and feeling "never good enough." My therapy focus is here-and-now, focusing on mind-body habits, to develop new behaviors, recondition brain connections, to go beyond mere understanding or insight.

My own lived experience with infertility and loss (along with specialized training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders) offers me a deep awareness of the impacts on not only those directly undergoing treatment but their loved ones as well.
Life can have it's challenges. Many of us rarely predict that one of those challenges will involve growing your family. I have a passion for helping those who might be undergoing fertility treatments, have experienced pregnancy loss, or are navigating maternal mental health related symptoms. I am a safe space and affirming of all identities and relationship structures.

It can be extremely difficult to talk about perinatal challenges, especially when you have little or no support, or just feel like those around you don’t understand what you are going through.
Are you having difficulty controlling your worries about getting pregnant, being pregnant, or having a child born with medical complications and spending all of your time and energy at the hospital? As a mom of a NICU baby, I've stayed up at night worrying about upcoming procedures, getting test results, or just wondering if my child will make it through and be happy and healthy. I'm here to help you understand your worries, be the best version of yourself for your little one, and learn how to cope with this very scary and very rewarding journey.

Life is hard and full of challenges, we all need some outside supports at different stages in our life. It is not always easy to be open and vulnerable to those people within our inner circle and that can feel lonely and isolating. A trusting therapeutic relationship can provide you the space and freedom many people need to be their true authentic self, to say what they have been holding in, and know they will be accepted through it all. I strive to create an atmosphere where each client can feel seen, heard, validated and celebrated for who they are. We are all worthy of this. Your story makes you uniquely you.

You might care for others but leave your needs behind. You are a complex, giving, normal person who in one way or another has taken hits in life. Perhaps traumatic experiences can cast a shadow over your life. I tend to work with those who are objectively quality, imperfect people but feel shame, abnormal guilt or other signals of denigrated self-worth, consciously or unconsciously. In addition to individual therapy and psychoanalysis, I offer therapy groups for anxiety, depression, isolation, and improving authentic, healthy communication.

Analysis and therapy help us move beyond the places we are stuck to a better understanding of who we are. I would be honored to walk with you on this journey towards your best self, offering a helping hand where needed. I work from an understanding of therapy that allows us to look at the past, the present and the future in understanding the issues you are facing and finding the path you desire to follow. Exploring family dynamics, relationship issues, self-concept, creative impulses, dreams, and life passions allow us to chart a course toward hope and healing.

Each of us sees life through a certain set of lenses. I am especially curious about how my clients view themselves and those they love. I help clients discover how their earliest relationships may be influencing their relationships today. In addition, I support clients working through any grief they are experiencing from relationship losses due to physical death, divorce, or addiction. These kinds of discoveries create options, and more flexibility in how people respond emotionally and behaviorally today

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
